No,that is not the camshaft position sensor.I have the CORRECT relpacement part and it looks nothing like diagram you sent me.The sensor I have is for the left side, and it basically consists of a 2 pin clip on one end,and a cylindrical 3/4 inch long sensor(magnetic) at the other end connected by 2 wires( one is white and the other is pink )there is a ground wire sautered to a small bracket as well as a black plastic housing and bracket attatched to the sensor.

  • michael voase Mar 27, 2011

Ginko,my appologies,I do believe that I may not have the correct replacement part indeed.OK then there is supposedly a right camshaft sensor, and a leftside.Would they however,be on the same side of the engine?

  • michael voase Mar 27, 2011

Well, that is what the part looks like that you sent me a pic of,the trick is how is it installed?

  • michael voase Mar 27, 2011

Are both the right and the left sensors located under the valve cover on the driver's side?

  • michael voase Mar 27, 2011

Thanks, that took a lot of guess work out of the way.I'll try and do the install, and hopefully i can get this thing start.

  • michael voase Mar 27, 2011

The schematic you sent me does not seem to be for a 4.0L V-8<4 cam,32 valve engine.

  • michael voase Mar 27, 2011

Ok then, thank you very much for your time and effort.

  • michael voase Mar 29, 2011

Ahh now that is a nice diagram of the location of the sensor,I'm going to assume that was the right side and that the left side is in the same location....Right ? Does this involve removing the valve covers as well ?

  • michael voase Mar 29, 2011

Before I go and replace these camshaft sensors I am thinking the starting problem may be something else.Talking to some other techs and online sources,I'm hearing that since the battery and the feul pump ECU were replaced that the problem may be that the cars main engine ECU may need to be reprogrammed.Have you ever heard of this occuring to a cars ECU over a battery replacement and FP ecu ?? Is this a possibility? and if so is this some can be should be done at a dealer? or can a good tech with a good diagnostic computer handle it? Thank you,Mike V....

Hi there Ginko, turns out I did'nt need to replace camsshaft sensors on my 1992 Lexus SC400 after all.I pulled a code on the car and found a number of things that were causing the car to not start. The ignition coil needed to replaced, the main ECU needed to be reprogrammed, due to the fact that one of the techs I had working on the car, disconnected the remote start and in doing so disarmed the entire security system, which in turn played havoc with the cars main ECU.I've got the crew at Brian's auto rewiring the remote strart and security systems and should have the car back soon. The car is now running, just trying to get the remote systems to work.I thank you for all your time and efforts in answering all my questions(especially the stupid ones!) and for your patients.I would highly recommend this website, and yourself, to others looking for answers to some tough questions.PS..I would NOT recommend using Ronnies mobile auto repair, the guy is unreliable, and does'nt know squat about foriegn cars.I would however highly recommend the guys over at Brian's Auto repair, off of Clark Rd.here in sunny Sarasota.Great techs and fast turn around time on repairs. Thanks again ginko, sincerely Mike V.-

Hi.

The sensor is located in the cylinder head, on the driver side.

The sensor is represented as part nr.3 in the diagram below:

I need to know where - ginko_98.gif

That is position of driver side camshaft position sensor from service manual. The service manual did not represent the wiring attached to the sensor. The whole part in real life looks like this. I do not guess:

....and the sensor is located on the cylinder head, under the valve cover.

Nope, you get one on driver side and one on the passenger side, otherwise there is just one. I do not have service documentation in front right now. I was logging off :)

I think there is just one on the driver side. You locate the connector to find the sensor.

    Hi.

The following is much clearer. Please download and open the zipped folder:

Click here to start download from MediaFire..

If that does not work, use :http://www.mediafire.com/?5p89252sel2cop... . The files are the same.

It is not. It is the SC430 V8 engine. I closed down the desktop. The sensor is in the same position.

I wanted to add a last picture of the camshaft position sensor as appears on the left bank cylinder head.

This is from the V8 32 Valve engine manual:

    Hi.

That is the left bank. There are two sensors only when the car has two camshafts. In that case the two sensors are in same position on the two sides.

    Hi.

You should scan the ECU for error codes and check.

    Follow this procedure:

    92-95 Sc300/sc400 Obd1 Code Retrieval - Lexus Owners Club (USA) .

    See codes here:

    Hi Mike.

Sorry to hear about the problems. The parts can be sourced second hand. If the engine and mechanics are good, mileage is not too high and you can do-it-yourself, then the SC400 is a nice car that is still worth repairing.
    Thanks for the feedback.

    All the best.

    Ginko.
