Question about 1988 Nissan 300ZX

1 Answer

1988 Nissan 300ZX Its been running fine, then I went and got an oil change, new tires, and alignment, now, it does not want to idle, and it bogs down when I am trying to drive it, like its not getting enough gas or air, (air filter is clean), or something. It starts up right away. Garage put it on a OBD2 scanner, and it said nothing was wrong with it.

Try changing your fuel filter. Check your mass air flow sensor. That might be going out. Or someone at that shop you went to tampered with your Idle level.

Check for a false air problem. This is when there is air is leaking between the throttle body and the air mass sensor. a cracked boot will do it. There are a series of hoses which hook up to the plastic intake section that is before the throttle body an air leak at any one of these can create a problem.I don't know if I would be leaning torwards the fuel filter because they don't just clogg up immediately, you would notice a loss in power at higher speeds and during hard acceleration.. As one person mentioned above, an air mass sensor cancause this condition. Often another symptom which would go along with this proble might be a popping through the intake wnen trying to acceelerate. If was running fine before these servces, an air filter isn't just going to cllg up and restrict the air flow unless somene put a rag in the intake housing which might allow just enough air to pass by it to cause that condition. I would be looking at the hoses between the air mass sensor and the throttle body first. I just cant see anyone tampering with your idle adjustment aside from the fact that the problem would notcause any of the other conditions.

I have a 1988 300zx I can start my car and it runs and drives fine but after it gets warmed up and going it acts like it's "running out of gas" and it dies but after it has sit and cooled off it will...

  • It sounds like you may have a bad head gasket or even cracked , When the car get warm it opens up and if your rad fluid is going it your cylinders and causing the car to misfire and smoke . The easiest way to tell the health of your motor is to do a compression test and look at the oil and rad fluid .

Bogs and backfires

What have you done so far? Does your van have electronic ignition or points? If the latter i'd check/replace points, capacitor & white, low tension wire inside distributor. Also check the spark plugs (all four should have the same grey/brown colour) & H.T. lead resistance, especially if the fault occurs under load/acceleration.
