Question about 1996 Audi A4

My wife and i bought an audi a4 2.8 v6 with an auto trans about 2 months ago, we were out on a drive. the car was running fine until we came to a stop, but when we tried to take off it started jerking and sputtering as if it were going to die. when we got the car home we shut it off, but when we tried to start it agian it wouldnt start again for about a half an hour. It only does this every once in a while, but makes nervous about driving anywhere..

Have you replaced the fuel filter? Having a clogged filter has the same symptoms. It is an inexpensive repair. If after that you have the same problem, have the fuel pump pressure checked. There is a test port on the fuel rail. You will need a qualified tech to do this.

It is probably the mass air flow sensor, you can try cleaning the small wire inside it (windex works the best) but chances are it will fault again soon after. replacing it is your best option.

2003 Audi A4 1.8T Check Engine light on


The CEL means there is a Diagnostic Fault Code stored in the Engine Control Unit. There are 1000's of DTC's, so you will need to have it read by a Code Reader. Auto Parts stores like Auto Zone, Pep Boys, perhaps even Advanced Auto often will read the code for you; but by law they cannot clear the codes. Many codes do not cause drivability problems, severe ones will trigger the ECU to run in a Limp Mode, which would require repair work before any trip longer than a few miles. Hope this is helpful.

the triuck needs to be scanned for trouble codes,most major auto part stores will do this for little or no charge. get back to me with the codes and we'll go from there, please rate my fix as i strive to be the best

Silly question: Have you checked the transmission fluid level, and is it to manufacturer's spec?
