Within one week my 2001 jetta tdi went from running great to being sluggish, and driving uphill on the freeway it wont go past 50mph but on level road it will slowly gain speed. I have just changed out the air and fuel filter in hopes that it would fix the problem but it has not. and my check engine light is on but the diagnostic says that it is a faulty glowplug. also the gears that run the timing belt are squeaking very loudly and it sounds like there is vacuum leak but it sounds like it is coming from the intake right at the number 1 cylinder. also when i primed the fuel filter, i primed it with injector cleaner could they be clogged ? it seems like it isn't getting the proper amount of fuel to operate correctly.thank you

Take it to the dealer, the EPC warning light - and even more the failsafe run which doesn't allow you drive faster than 20mph) is an indication of serious motor troubles. They can read the ECU faultcodes, which should be a good startingpoint for troubleshooting the cause ...
You could do some basic troubleshooting like checking the air filter, the oil level, the spark plugs, etc. You didn't fill it up with bad gas, did you ? And does the engine make strange noises/vibration when running idle ? In case you fixed some obvious cause, you can dis- and reconnect the battery to erase the engine's faultcode. If it's not fixed, the EPC (and failsafe run) will simply come on again.
My advice would be not to drive it untill it's fixed to prevent more potential damage.
A mechanic told me there really isn't a "tune up" per say for a Jetta TDI. Most importantly, the timing belt (w/water pump) replacement is the biggest concern. Change all the belts, check the glow plugs. If you drive on the highway a lot, the mass air flow sensor and its related hoses should be ok (carbon build up).
sounds like something was set up wrong.timing belt ...cam/crank sensor/ or work on mechanicals not clean..valves/piston damage...or....alot of junk went through motor when this occurred and your catalytic converter is clogged
