Remove lower instrument panel trim panel. Remove two steering column to dash and brake support bracket nuts and lower the steering column. Remove the two ignition switch to column screws and lift the switch off of the lock rod. Remove the black harness connector first and then remove the white harness connector.

My 1990 Chev blazer 1500 with 350 engine all of a sudden died while I was driving. battery is good and engine cranks but wont start. I think it's an ignition problem but not sure.

could be ignition switch, crank sensor or cam sensor, neutral safety switch. If you can get a scan tool, with OBD I plug for gm you will be able to pull code/codes. Better than removing /replacing parts until you find problem. Two of my customers have had the same problem, it was the ignition switch on one and the crank sensor on the other.

How do I pull the service engine soon code from my 1990 Chevrolet 1500? Thank you

The ALCL connector is located at the base of the dash usually near the steering column. You can use a paper clip to connect the A and B terminal togeather. The check engine light will flash or blink the codes. A example is one flash then a pause then two quick flashes is a code 12 which means no reference pulses to the ECM. The engine is not running. You pull the codes with the ignition switch on but the engine should not be running. Write back with the codes and I can tell you what they mean.

How to change a ignition switch on a 1990 Z24 cavalier and a diagramof what to look for

Ignition Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1982–91 Vehicles The switch is located on the steering column and is completely inaccessible without first lowering the steering column. The switch is actuated by a rod and rack assembly. A gear on the end of the lock cylinder engages the toothed upper end of the rod.
  1. Lower the steering column; be sure to properly support it.
  2. Put the switch in the OFF-UNLOCKED position. With the cylinder removed, the rod is in OFF-UNLOCKED position when it is in the next to the uppermost detent.
  3. Unfasten the two switch screws and remove the switch assembly. Fig. 1: Removal and installation of the ignition switch and related steering column components — 1990 vehicle shown 87958059.gif
Fig. 2: Exploded view of a steering column including the ignition switch — 1990 vehicle with standard column shown 87958060.gif
Fig. 3: Exploded view of the steering column including the ignition switch — 1990 vehicle with tilt column shown 87958061.gif
    To install:
  4. Before installing, move the new switch slider (standard columns with automatic transaxle) to the extreme left position. Move the switch slider (standard columns with manual transaxle) to the extreme left position. Move the slider (adjustable columns with automatic transaxle) to the extreme right position and then move the slider one detent to the left (off lock). Move the slider (adjustable columns with manual transaxle) to the extreme right position.
  5. Install the activating rod into the switch and assemble the switch on the column. Tighten the mounting screws. Use only the specified screws, since overlength screws could impair the collapsibility of the column.
  6. Reinstall the steering column.

How do I change the ignition switch in my 1990

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Place lock cylinder in the Run position.
  3. Remove steering wheel.
  4. Remove turn signal switch. It is not necessary to completely remove the turn signal switch from the column. Pull switch rearward enough to slip it over the end of the shaft. Do not pull the harness out of the column.
  5. Remove attaching screw and lock cylinder set. Do not drop the screw into the column.
  6. To install, align cylinder key with keyway in housing, as shown in Fig. 1. Push the lock completely inward, install attaching screw and torque to 40 inch lbs., on standard columns, or 22 inch lbs., on tilt columns.
