Question about Daihatsu Charade

3 Answers

Hi there,i have a 2003 daihatsu copen, colour silver.the electrics in the roof mechanism work however, after closing the roof again, the front left corner of the boot lid stays up about an inch, therefore its not flush with the rest of the car, with minimal pressure you can close it, but inside it seems there is a problem with the alignment of the brackets, as their not picking up its rod. this happens everytime i close the roof, just wondering if anyone has heard of this, knows a solution, or costs associated. any help would be appreciated. thanks

hi there, thanks for replying. i will be using a professional mechanic obviously for repairs, but was wondering if anyone knew anything about the problem, like does it sound like a minor problem( brackets, misalignment) or major overhaul of roof/boot electrics, which i have been quoted over $6000( cheapest quote ).Looking for a daihatsu expert. Thankyou

thanks voodoomox, think you hit the nail on the head with the first diagnosis. think i need more than luck... ;)

Thanks votit. Yeah the motor and roof operation is perfect, it just that last operation of the boot resting in place evenly on both sides. Which looks like maybe something has broken or seperated it from its track on the left hand side. Has anyone had a copen or know much about their reputation and reliability, im having a hard time tracking parts down. And when if roof motor goes my cheapest quote was $6000....ouch!

there is a release inside (on each side) you pull & turn 90 degrees to lock open - sounds like you need to turn that side 90 degrees the other way to latch it back closed

where is this release?? is it the ones with the blue handles on in the boot?? my drivers side of the boot is sat slightly up. When i go to open my roof, the windows come down and then nothing happens

Usually break something in the roof mechanism. Most common is the water trough at the rear breaks, either both sides or one side., most times won't allow correct operation. Check at the rear of the roof, just under the glass for the water trough. Put the roof into vent and you should be able to see or feel this trough. The other breakage is in the side pieces that connect to the metal linkage. I haven't seen many roofs fail other than this or a bad motor. The motor drives cables to move the glass, so the only gears are where the motor fits into the roof. I suspect something plastic has broken and is causing binding and noise. Sometimes the trough comes loose completely and stays behind in the roof.

hope this may help;

Regards,
VOTIT

This is a retractable hardtop, as per your description, it can be a problem with the damper the pushes and pulls the roof. it can also be that a joint on the roof assembly is loose or have some off.

as per costs it is best if you consult the dealer to get an authorized Daihatsu technician to give you the estimate, but personally ide go for 600 bucks above if it is just the hydrolics loosing calibration. if it will go to the electricals and the controls of the roof mechanism, it can be more.

good luck on this one buddy

Hi there i have a clio mk2 with electric sunroof.i was washing my car yesterday and just happened to play around with the electric sun roof which has never worked properly (only the right side used to...

It sounds like the left side motor or mechanism is not operating for whatever reason. If you can gain access to the left side motor or mechanism, perhaps you can remove the motor, and then turn the mechanism manually, in order to close the sunroof? Hope this helps.

2003 tiburon power sunroof won't close all the way . It'll open all the way but starts to close & then stops.

sounds like the metal deflector in front of the sunroof,is separated and caught in the roof mechanism, however there are other issues that can cause that condition, it can be anything from a bad sunroof switch to the sunroof tracks jamming, start with looking to see if there any obstuctions in the track..the sunroof mechanism can get costly to repair.

Change the oil filter of a daihatsu copen

unless there is something unusual about it... the filter unscrews and you install a new one. you should put a drop of oil on your finger and rub it around the filter gasket before you screw it back on the motor. often you will need an oil filter wrench, abit of a misnomer as it is basically a band that goes around the oil filter with a handle. the newer style is a large socket piece that fits over the end of the oil filter and you turn with a rachet.

Electrical problem in Daihatsu copen

ok so looks like this one has been solved by the dealer.
I had it towed to them, and they said the battery had to be replaced (only had 8vlt in it)
and something to do with the cell inside the battery had failled. No surprise here - its the same battery which came with the car - 5 years or so ago.
They are still working on it, so wont know if its anything else. Battery's in Australia arent cheap
for this car - 125 dollars, and neither are most parts. But then i use the car for business, and drive everywhere. The car was used everyday, but i suspect it went flat, as most copen owners would know, seems to go flat if you dont use the car for some period of time, like 1 week or so,'

Convertable roof and trunk won't open

The Roof Mechanism works with two motors similiar to the ones that wund the windows. Now the two mechanism are located in the left side of the trunk.

The trunk wont open Because of the roof lid that is not closed properly. How you can test this is to press down on the right sid of the roof lid and then try to opne the trunk.

Now the reason that this is happening is that the roof lid is not closing properly nad pressing on a small orange buttin located just below the right hand side roof lid catch. How you are going to remedy this problem is to adjust the cable tension to close more securely.

Now the two motors in the trunk that works the convertable roof can be engaged and disengaged on motor works the roof lid and the other one the roof.

You need to get these motors in sync so that they open and close the roof in the correct order.

That is if the electric are still working.

My S Reg 323i electric roof.

Ive had the same problem on my car. If you open the trunk and pull away the material covering on the left hand side you will find two electric motors similar to the ones that winds the windows these motors have to be in exact sync for the whole system to work fine.

The one drives the lid and the other one drives the roof. You can engage and disengage the motors to get the roof in sync and working perfectly. Also check that when the lid closes it engages a button on the left that allowes the roof to close aver the lid after the lid has closed this button also tells the car that the roof lid is closed and it is ok to let the trunk be opened.

I also suggest that you treat the roof mechanism with some penetrating oil.
