Question about Mercedes-Benz M-Class
This is not a small job by any means and should not be attempted by anyone that is not a proficient mechanic.
If you were to attempt it at home, I would seriously recommend purchasing a service manual for your vehicle to aide you.
Typically it would involve purchasing a timing kit, waterpump, thermostat, complete head gasket set, and lots of brake clean spray. Follow the book instructions to remove the cylinder head. Once the head is out, you should send it to a machinist in order to have the head checked and insure that it will be reusable. The machinist will take your vehicle information and use his/her sources to machine your cylinder head to precise specifications.
While that is happening, I would suggest cleaning around the engine bay, and using some brake cleaner to clean grime out of the intake manifold and off of the fuel injectors. Replacing the fuel filter and this point would be beneficial.
After you receive your head from the machine shop, just reassemble to book instruction. Install the new water pump, thermostat, timing kit, gaskets, seals, and any parts you notice are missing or broken.
Your vehicle should run very nicely after this, especially if you compliment it with fresh spark plugs, and ignition bits.
