Question about 1997 Subaru Legacy

2 Answers

I have a 1997 Subaru outback sport wagon, and i have two issues that have occurred this week. My engine light came on while driving and I noticed a loss of power in 5th gear when going uphill, and lags on flat ground and lags in 1st gear when cold. The second problem, my brake lights stay on constantly, even when engine is off. I just had the brake switch replaced in January. Where do I start?

Hello, I checked the brake fluid level and it is full. Is there any fuse that I can remove so the brake lights go off and the running lights stay on? If so, would that fuse be located under the release hood latch? One other problem that I just started to hear was a clicking from my front tires when I turn right. Would that be a cv joint issue? Thanks

Are ypu check trans fluid level? Sound like a Torque Converter problem. Additionally, if the check engine light is turn on, some fault code is stored in the PCM, then scanned the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to kno excatly what fault is there and send additional details about diagnostic and solution tips.

Keep us updated.

Hi

You have already changed the brake switch now pull upward on the brake pedal, towards yourself & the seat & see if the brake lights go out. If it does, the return spring is weak or broken.

However there are various reasons for the brake light to come on. As soon as your brake light has come on first check out your brake situation .Turn the engine off and open the hood. Check the brake fluid resevoir and if it is low you might want to have the system checked. To find the brake fluid reservoir (also called the "brake master cylinder"), look for a round black rubber cap about 2 to 4 inches in diameter that covers a plastic container. Imagine where your foot would be if it went all the way through the car toward the engine past your brake pedal. This is where you will almost always find the brake master cylinder.

Check the fine print on the rubber cap. It should say, "Use only DOT 4 (or 5 or 3) brake fluid."Remove the cap. If the cap is dusty or dirty, wipe it off with a rag so no dirt particles fall into the reservoir.

Check what kind of brake fluid your car requires. This is indicated on the rubber brake reservoir cap and in the owner's manual. DOT 5 is the highest grade available right now and can be used in any system. If your car requires DOT 4, do not use DOT 3 or a lower-grade fluid. DOT stands for Department of Transportation. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid up to the "full" line. If there is no "full" indicator, fill it to the top.

Put the cap back on and wipe up any spills. Turn the car on and the light should be off. If your problem persists or for a regular checkup it is suggested to take your car to the auto shop.

However if the check engine light comes on it means your vehicle's computer has determined that a component or system in your emission control system is not working properly.

When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the engine control module. These DTCs remain even if the light goes out. To address a Check Engine Light problem, the DTCs are retrieved and the appropriate troubleshooting information is followed in order to determine the problem.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

If you are getting sparks at the positive cable when attaching I would suspect a hard short in the system. Check that the starter has not shorted.

2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.
