If you did not disconnect the battery before removing the starter, a relay or fuse could have been blown.
It could also be that the cable is not connected properly or screw is loose.

The starter just sounds like its spinning and wont start, its a diesel van

Inside your starter is something called a "Bendix drive". It is the part that engages the gear into the flywheel. It is spring loaded and does wear out. This would cause your starter to spin and not start the van. If you are mechanically inclines it can be bought at any auto parts store and replaced, but you already have the starter off the van to do this so unless you are on an extreme budget, I'd replace the starter and solenoid and be done with it. Usually if you need to replace this then it will only be a month or two and the starter will have to come off again for something else. Hope this helps.

My van wont start i've checked the starter it's good, i've bought a brand new battery, and an ignition switch. why wont my van start

Because you are replacing parts instead of checking if you need them or not. First you need to verify that the stater has power on the large cable. then there is a small wire on the solenoid, this should have power when trying to start, if it does, and the starter is good, then it should start, if the wire does not have power, find out why. The wire comes from the Neutral Switch on the trans. So it wont start unless its in N or P. So find the color wire that is at the solenoid, should be the same color at the neutral switch. there should be a wire there that has power when in the crank mode, i fpower goes into the switch, it has to come out to the starter. . You will need a wiring diagram for your van to go further.

Engine start problems

the problem could be the starter, battery, battery cables, or alternator. the clicking could most likely be the starter going bad if not bad already or the battery weak or bad battery cables, if you have good power to everything else radio headlamps and heater the i would start by replacing starterlet me know what you find.
