Is it slipping? It may be the band's if you got a used transmission. good luck to you.

Transmission

This is not good. Water can ruin everything. If this was a car that was offered for sale it would be SALVAGE only. The problems sometimes never go away. If the transmission was not serviced after this episode then water may have damaged it. However water may have had nothing to do with it. The clutch packs might have just worn out. So the only way to tell is drop the pan on the transmission and check for water. HOWEVER, it is going to have to be rebuilt anyway. So it is best to take it to a shop.;

Need to know how to change fuel pump 97 sierra 2wd v6

you need to go get a manual on this at your local parts store(haynes #24065)this is not a real big job to do,i have put one in my truck this manual breaks it down very good,i orderd my stuff from partsgeek.com saved a lot of money with them,i would advise you to change the whole unit,pump and sending unit,i went cheap and only replaced the fuel pump,well a month later the sending unit went out so i had to drop the tank again to put a new sending unit in it..

I want to switch transmissions

If they are both 4L60Es' then yes. I know the 96 1500 does but you didn't state what size the 97 is. And are they both 4X4?

2002 gmc sierra trouble code P0740

This is a transmission failure code. The transmission is going into "limp" mode. Recommend to have local repair shop perform further diagnosis. Possible transmission failure.

Slow shifting when engine is cold

I have the same problem with my 97.... especially shifting from 3rd to O/D... I've had the tranny serviced and flushed.... It still does it until the tranny warms up.... the tranny's in them are temperature picky!!!!! It's the nature of the beast!!! Wait until spring and everything will be good until next winter!!! If you're really concerned with it you can put a "cold front" on it or block half (NO MORE THAN HALF) of the tranny cooler with cardboard thru the winter months
