Question about 1996 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

Looking for Kravcar to answer this:\r\n1996 cadillac deville northstar. It overheats very quickly and antifreeze leaks out of the overflow tube. Had a flush & fill and replaced thermostat. A garage did a diagnostic on coolant system, nothing came up, also a pressure test and they said it was fine. They said they ran it for over an hour & drove it with no problems, then we drove it for about an hour, no problem, let it idle for 10mins and temp went up to 260. Now the garage said it was a blown head gasket internally on the exhaust side. No loss of power, runs well. The garage said it wasn't the water pump because the belt is moving, the fan is working. Should we get a 2nd opinion or is it a blown head gasket? Thanks

Ity sounds like the electric fan is not turning on, if it is only overheating at idle (sitting still) and is not overheating when driving, but any good shop should have already determined this. open the hood while idling, and watch to see if the fan by the radiator turns on when idling, and the temp is going up. if the fan is indeed working, then it may be the head gasket, or it may be a slow-to-open thermostat.

if it is the head gasket, you should notice one of the following symptoms: smoke out the tailpipe- usually white, green or red (depending on your type) coolant dripping from the tailpipe at start-up, murky or bubbly oil from coolant leaking into the oil, or an oily film on top of the coolant from oil leaking into the coolant. a clear water drip from the tailpipe is normal, form condensation, but if the drip is the color of your coolant, then you definitely have a head gasket issue.

What is the normal operating temp in cooling system of a northstar engine?

For my 1997 Cadillac Deville limousine with 4.6 L Northstar it should be 196 to 205 deg. And top out at no more than 230 deg. F. Check multispeed fans for high speed turning over and antifreeze fluid level in overflow tank. Also, check for head gasket leaks through tailpipe which will show up as steam when you start the engine.

Engine problems northstar

Might be a head gasket, might be a freeze (expansion) plug. You COULD try one tube of AlumaSeal or BronzeSeal, see if that helps. DO NOT use one of the waxy-type cooling-system sealers - they just clog your cooling system.

Please help. I have a 1996 Cadillac deville v8 northstar. My question is what is the cause of overheating. Symptoms. 1. White smoke out of the tail pipes. 2. No loss of hp. 3. No loss of coolant unless...

to check for leaks go to an accredited radiator shop and have a pressure test done --check that there are no air locks in the system
the transmission could be the problem as the transmission oil cooler is in one of the radiator tanks
when idling there is no torque in the transmission but when travelling the transmission is under load
IT might be advisable to go to an accredited auto transmission shop
have an oil change done and have the bands and clutch packs adjusted
the pan has to come off to do that and if there is a problem in the transmission , there will be signs in the transmission pan

My 2000 cadillac deville keep running hot when i drive it.the coolant shoots out the coolant tank when i open it.i changed the radiator and the thermostat.i don't think a head is blown cause it dosen't...

OK, check that the 2 fans are turning on when it gets to operating temperature. If not, replace the 3 or so relays that control the two speed fans on your car.If that doesn't solve the problem, then you may have to buy new fan motors and also have the harness replaced if necessary to make it cool reliably.

I had this problem on a 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine that overheated over 157 deg. F and went into its limp mode for cooling the engine off by allowing 1/2 of the cylinders to circulate fresh air into the engine in case all antifreeze would leak out or the car would overheat.

Don't run the Northstar engine too long, more than 45 min. at a time in this limp mode.

Good luck on this repair of your Northstar Engine.

1997 cadillac deville overheats antifreeze comming from overflow tank hose to the ground

Check cooling system for presence of exhaust fumes. Your unit has head bolt issues and compression gasses enter cooling system. VERY expensive to repair correctly.

When a Cadillac (Northstar) overheats, It will give the message to change the oil. If you run a Northstar and keep running it long enough it will start shutting off cylinders and stop the A/C compressor to help protect itself. In this condition I would check for a blown headgasket. Possibly your technican will find the problem. Could also be stuck thermostat, dirty radiator Thanks

Whatever you do, NEVER allow this engine to overheat and always use the correct antifreeze (DEX COOL) or you will damage your heads severly. The heads were made from aluminum so there is a very serious warping issue on the 1998 Cadillac Northstar engines. There should have been a recall but wasnt, ended up costing me 3 thousand USD to fix the engine problems I had but she now runs fine. I only had the car 4 months before this happened so someone prior to me owning evidentaly let it overheat on too many occassions and I had no choice but to fix cause I was still paying on the car!! Good luck

Why is water coming out of my radiator in my 97 cadillac deville with a northstar

NOt enough info. Where is the water coming from top or bottom? Could be a leak at a seam, could be a loose cap, could be a leaky overflow bottle, could be a loose hose connection and it could be a crack or leaking hose.
