They are hydraulic lifters. Remove rocker covers, start motor, they will rattle oil, tools are available for that. Loosen rocker nut until you here tapping. Tighten nut until tapping stops. Then tighten 3/4 of a turn. It will run rough for a minute until the lifter adjusts.
indicates worn hydraulic lifters leaking back oil and are dry on start up
Cheap fix
is to use a heavier oil ( 30w-50 instead of 10-20) use oil filters that have an anti drain valve in them
dear fix
is to replace the lifters with new ones
this may be detonation from incorrect air/fuel /timing combination. IT is generally lean mixture and mostly can be heard on acceleration. Run fault codes to find faulty sensor that is affecting the correct air fuel mixture.
20lbs really is not enough to cause the lifters to make noise, the gauge maybe wrong The oil pump screen maybe stopped up,and the rod and main bearings maybe worn.If this was helpful, please rate, thank you.
The noise you hear could very well be a lifter. But that is not what is causing your engine light to come on. The engine light problem can be diagnosed by having the codes read. You can have this done for free at most national parts chains such as Advance or Auto Zone. Good luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful!
if it is an over head cam motor they dont have any lifters valves work directly off the cam if not you have 1 lifter per valve example 16 valve engines have 16 lifters
3 valves per cylinder 4 cylinder engine, 3X4 is 12, so yes 12 is correct, no u don't have to change all of them, just the defective ones, the reason they want to do this is one of 2 things, there is a problem with the design of the original lifters and they want to update them, 2nd reason is they have been unable to isolated which lifter(s) are causing the tapping noise.
