The noise from the top of the motor is from the lifters starving for oil. Dont run the car any more in this condition until you can fix it. This could be low oil level, bad oil pump, or screen on pcikup for oil pump is clogged. If the oil level is ok, you are going to have to drop the oil pan on the bottom of the engine. This requires first draining the oil by removing the drainhole bolt and letting the oil drop into a pan. then remove the bolts on the oil pan and drop the pan. Then you will be able to see the oil pump and pickup screen. If the pickup screen is clogged. it needs to be cleaned, however since you have already gone to all of this trouble I would also replace the oil pump whether it needs it or not. At 243,000 it probably needs it. So you will need a new oil pump and a oil pan gasket. You can use the same pick up screen, just clean it. This is a cheap repair with minimal labor involved.

With that many miles on the engine it could be sludged up or the oil pump could be failing.

Whining noise coming from the top of the engine. 2007 Volvo S80 3.2 120k Miles.

indicates what you suspect
the noise could be sump pressure trying to pass the faulty PCV valve and pressure in the sump will blow oil out of weak seal and gaskets

Driver side rattling noise disappears as speed up very loud when slow down coming from engine its a mini cooper 56 plate with only 31000 on the clock

It can be a number of issues if the noise is engine related but have the oil pressure checked with an external oil pressure gauge.
Most mechanics will have them.
I would also change the oil and oil filter immediately and ensure you ONLY use the correct oil as specified by the manufacturer for that engine. (Using an incorrect formulation or the wrong grade will cause engine issues).

I suspect the engine is losing oil pressure and oil flow at low RPM and you are getting metal to metal contact on the top end of the engine when this happens as the low pressure is producing a lack lubrication to the upper end of the engine. At higher RPM the oil pressure increases as does the oil flow and the noisy internals are getting sufficient lubrication again or at least enough to eliminate metal to metal contact and stop the rattling.

Tick in motor with a lot of blowback coming from oil cap has started making a whining noise. not the knock sensor. could it be the oil pump?

The ticking may be coming from the valves, and or, the rocker arms, and or, the lifters. I have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier that has valve train noise and has 230,000 miles on it and is still going. If you are taking the oil cap off when the engine is running, you will see oil spitting out of it, since the engine is lubing the top end. Most vehicles have a pressure gauge on the instrument panel, and or, an oil light, which would show pressure problems. Try to isolate where the ticking is coming from by using a mechanics stethoscope, or a screw driver to your ear. The handle part of the screw driver goes to your ear of course. Place the scope or screw driver blade close to where the tick is coming from and you will hear the ticking get louder the closer you get to it.

No if the oil light has flickered you have oil pressure loss some time just belive the sensor do help us out. lifter do not cause oil pressure loss pressure is built in the rotation of the crankshaft. The knock under the plenum will point you to that cylinder that is affected, (main bearing) as for a 1995 the injectors can only cause a misfire but no knocking noise, will they honor the warranty

Have a 1999 firebird, new oil change the oil pressure is fine but when its time for it again the oil pressure drops below 60psi and now when i start it, it makes a tapping sound then goes away, can i drive...

First unless some one put a high pressure oil pump in it, you shouldn't be getting 60lbs of pressure. You might want to replace the oil sending unit to see what your pressure really is. Listen to see where the tapping is coming from, top or bottom of the engine. If it,s the top then it's a lifter/s. this can be caused by wear or a collapsed lifter. Wear can be adjusted out. collapsed lifters are usually dirty. they can be cleaned while the engine is running, ask your mechanic. If the noise is coming from the bottom , then your bearings are wearing out. this is an engine over haul or time for a different engine. Oil breaks down and looses viscosity (thickness of the oil) this is why the pressure goes down. You can drive your car to get the oil change. I would suggest an oil treatment be added to your car if you have really high miles.

I have a 2003 passat, while driving , the check oiil light came on so I stopped and checked and it was full. upon proceeding just a few miles i heard a rattling noise, I stopped an listened and it sounded...

You have a broken oil pump. The light indicates loss of oil pressure. You have plenty of oil, but no oil pressure. Continued driving will shorten the life of engine dramtically or can wreck the engine completely in a short time. You need to take it to a mechanic asap, unless you plan on tackling it yourself. in which case you should re-post for help with that, or search Google for instructions.

Sorry, and good luck.

Sound gets louder win in motion it has 243,000 miles.culd it be a rocker arm? it has good oil pressure. 2000 jeep grand cherokee laradoe straight 6 4.0 automatic 4x4 makes tapping sound? what should i...

What kind of sound? If it's a ticking sound from inside the valve cover it could be a bad rocker arm, worn lifter or lifter & cam lobe or broken valve spring (needs to be looked at). If the noise is deep and best heard at the oil pan. it could be a rod bearing or main beginning to go but generally, that lowers oil pressure. Another item that sounds nearly the same is a cracked flywheel. Careful listening can often unravel this or have a very experienced tech look at it....(still your choice on who does the repair).

Engine makes loud knocking noise that seems to be coming from the very top of the engine. I should note that this car has 175000 miles on it

Knocking noises from the overhead cam may be making the noise in question. Maybe a bad bearing on the camshaft or a spun cam.

175,000 mi. is a lot of miles for an engine, it may have been over revved at some point, or suffered from oil starvation or dirty oil with a prior owner.

Ticking or clicking noise in the engine while at idle speed

The "lifters" are valve lifter, not oil lifters. They are best described as hydraulic cushions. They use the engine oil pressure to expand and take up the slack between components. As the engine wears, clearances increase and the oil pressure decreases at idle. The ticking goes away with an increase RPM because the oil pressure increases. Using an additive like STP to thicken the oil some might stop it. It isn't uncommon or serious. I had a car once that had lifter noise unless I used Rislone detergent additive to keep varnish from building up around the lifter making it stick. The symtom of coolant in the oil is milkey foam. Some synthetic oils go in clear then turn red or purple. Relax and enjoy the next 100,000 miles. Keep the oil and air filter changed and watch for a leaking water pump. Overheating because the water pump seal or thermostat failed is the death of an older engine. If you want to be proactive, have these and the radiator hoses changed. Avoid a made in China water pump if possible.
