It cranks but won't start. The fuel pump doesn't make noise. Then all of a sudden it works.

Sounds like a bad fuel pump relay.

SOURCE: "Cranks, but won't start". Replaced fuel pump, CKP, ICM & nothing

If the engine cranks over normally when you attempt to start you car, but the engine does not start, the problem may be NO FUEL, NO SPARK or NO COMPRESSION. The engine needs adequate fuel pressure, a properly timed spark and normal compression to start.

1) To find why the engine won't start, remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body, push the throttle open and spray a small amount of aerosol starting fluid into the engine. Crank the engine. If it has spark and compression but NO FUEL, it will start and run a few seconds before dying. If it does NOT start, it probably has NO SPARK.

2)Another method to check for spark is to pull a spark plug wire off of a spark plug (if it has plug wires, coil-on-plug ignitions do not) and place the open end of the plug wire near a metal surface on the engine. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch for a spark. DO NOT hold the wire while doing this as it can shock you. If you see a spark, the problem is not spark, but most likely NO FUEL or NO COMPRESSION. If you do not see a spark, the problem is in the IGNITION CIRCUIT.

3)Proper fuel pressure is critical for fuel injected engines to start and run. You should hear the fuel pump inside the fuel tank buzz for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on (no buzz means the pump is not running and the engine is not getting fuel). You can smell the tailpipe for gasoline vapors after cranking the engine. If you smell gas, the problem is likely not fuel but NO SPARK. You can also remove the plastic cap and press the schraeder valve test fitting on the fuel rail to see if there is any fuel pressure to the engine (not a very accurate test because fuel pressure must be at a certain level for the engine to start, for that you need a gauge). Even so, no fuel at the fuel rail would tell you fuel is not getting to the engine..

Probably, also, if it's an electric, check to make sure the pump is actually getting power. The wires may have gone bad.

you failed to say, does crank, when it don't start?
and btw, the fuel pump on most cars only run cranking or running
some run for 3 seconds, key on, but you'd miss that fact. using
only one person.
the key word here is crank, does it crank as full speed, via the cranking starter motor. that is the engine cranks spins fast.
on this car it will spin min 250 RPM, cranking, and uses large
battery current , so on diesels it takes a very strong battery to start
and working glow plugs.

98 Isuzu rodeo, engine cranks and trys to start but it won't

If this is a diesel engine you probably have an air lock in the fuel system. It will need "bleeding" before it will start. If you have already tried bleeding the fuel system there may be an air lock in the injectors. If it still doesn't start I suggest you carry out a compression check because diesel engines need to be in good condition to start easily, especially in cold weather If it is a petrol engine, there could be problems with engine timing or ignition problems.

hi lynn. the first thing i would check is battery and battery conection, after that, fuses . J would have to have more information about your dodge to determine what is wrong with it.( does it make any noises when u start up the engine? if you know the battery is ok but wont start up, u should listen if fuel pump is working after u turn key on in ignition. If fuel pump doesn't make any noises thats praboblay what is wrong solution : new pump

GMC 2000 sierra pick up 1500 sounds like it wants to start but won't turn over. Battery sounds good so I guess battery and alternator are ok. For several years fuel gauge doesn't work and...

It sure could be. But, first...by "won't turn over" you do mean it cranks at normal speed but won't start?
A simple test of the fuel pump is to stand by tank and listen as someone turns key to on. When first turned to on, your pump will activate for 2 or 3 seconds, pressurizing the fuel system, and then shut off if the engine computer doesn't get a cranking signal. Do you hear it come on? If not, then something's not turning your pump on. If you can hear it buzz on briefly, then maybe it's your filter. Another test: Spray a little starting fluid into your intake manifold (remove the big hose going into intake manifold) while someone tries starting it.If it doesn't fire and try to stay running, then it's probably an ignition problem. But if it does fire off, then you know it's a fuel problem-likely your pump or filter. good luck.

check all your rounds on the body, behind kick panels, and in engine compartment. The relays you hear clicking are the power relay whcih turns your engine computer on. The other relay is the fuel pump relay, which is turned on by the engine computer. start there, report back.

PS. When you press the gas pedal to the floor during cranking, it shuts off the fuel supply to clear a flooded engine.

My car won't start when you turn the key the fuel pump doesn't make the noise it does before you start , few people have said its the fuel pump relay , where would i find it and wot does it look...

if you dont hear the pump and you once did, probably pump bad,try starting fluid in air box-tube to mass air,if cranks and shuts of car isnt getting fuel, you can pull line to motor loose to see if gas is getting to motor, check filter for blockage, still no gas more than likely pump bad.

98 Chevy blazer won't start up but will crank ,,

Try giving it a shot of starting fluid. You don't say if it's actually firing. If it tries or runs for a few seconds off of the starting fluid then try changing the fuel pump relay. It's inside of the glove box on the left hand side behind the little door. If that doesn't work it's most likely the fuel pump.

2004 z71 tahoe when the gas gauge is at a quarter of a tank it won't crank. It acts like it is empty with gas.

Check your fuel filter if it needs replacement. Empty it out then connect it back. Try to start it again. Inspect the fuel filter if it filled with gasoline. Check if there is noise at the fuel tank to check if the pump is working. If it did not, inspect the fuse for your fuel pump and the relay. If both are good you may connect the fuel pump directly to the battery to see if it works. It may be a bad wiring.
