The water pump is NOT powered by the timing belt. Can you tell where the antifreeze is leaking from?

Have a 2003 Mercury grand marquis is overheating only while driving when trying to shift into overdrive at 45mi/hr then loses power changed water pump belt tensioner what am I missing

Did you change the thermostat, if it is shut or closed the water will not circulate through the engine and cause a over heating problem. To see if the antifreeze is circulating through the engine, start the car and gently remove the radiator cap taking care not to have hot antifreeze burn you, then look and see if the antifreeze is moving through the radiator if it is the thermostat is not stuck shut. and you may have a different problem. Hope this helps.

My 2006 dts is over heating. Water pump belt snapped, and pulleys damaged, but water pump isnt locked up nor lose. Why the ever heat. I did recently change the front end.

If the water pump pulley turns easy with no noise and is smooth, then make sure you have the right belt and the routing diagram. Install the belt, the engine shouldn't overheat now. If it does, you may have a failed thermostat, they usually fail in the open position and then the engine may not get up to operating temperature. But it may have seized up especially if you don't use antifreeze.

Why wouldn't water circulate through the radiator

You are spot on. Bad water pump. It is also probably the reason your timing belt was frayed. The water pumps of later model cars usually drip some through a "weep" hole in the bottom when they are going out as a kind of warning "Hey, you gotta get me a replacement soon!" But unless you live where no air conditioner is ever needed, or used, most people think it is the drippings from the AC. Get that pump replaced ASAP and when done, do a compression check on all your cylinders to make sure there was no head gasket damage from overheating. Good luck.

I have a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon that is overheating. How can I tell if I have a bad water pump or if it could be the thermostat. Does not appear to be a radiator leak or hose leak, but I am constantly...

If it's overheating it will lose antifreeze.I would change the thermostat first and see it it solves the overheating problem if not then worry about the water pump. Thermostats are only $7-10.

Leaking from water pump and timing belt is slasded

If you are losing antifreeze out of the water pump, then that is a sympton telling you it's time to replace the water pump. When you say the timing belt is slashed up, do you mean the serpentine belt that runs the power steering pump, ac pump, alternator, and water pump or have you actually torn the engine apart enough to see the timing belt?

If you in fact mean the serpentine belt, chances are it's torn up because either antifreeze got on the belt making it slick enough to get off track and when they get off track, they can get slashed up pretty quick.

Good Luck

Water overheating on a year 2000 seat toledo 1.9tdi se, is the water pump easy to replace??

Water pumps are not normally what causes overheating, in fact that would be my last item to change. The only way that a water pump fill cause overheating is if the impeller has come off the shaft or completely worn down. I would first start with the thermostat. If this dosn't fix it, then I would be looking at the condition of the radiator I.E. is it plugged, are the fins up front full of bugs and debris ect. Then I would also check the cooling fan operation, does it come on when engine is hot? also does it come on with the A.C. operation-it should. Then last of all the water pump- and no its not easy on this one, due to lack of clearance.

Smelled mild burning, lost antifreeze - engine temp Hot. I looked under car and noticed a serverly frayed Belt - NOT the big surpentine belt - another small belt on the driver's side. 1999 Mercury Mystique...

For the 1999 Mercury Mystique Water Pump Belt on 2.5L V6 Engine:

Probable Causes: Belt: worn out, started slipping. Overheating caused by failure of Belt. Lost antifreeze: caused by failure of belt, not turning Water Pump Pulley, not circulating anitfreeze, which resulted in overheating.

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Serpentine & Drive Belt Diagrams and Tensioners for your 2.5L Engine.
Scroll down the Page (about 1/3rd down) to Diagram #G99H08189, it shows the specific Water Pump Belt.
Note the Tensioner.
