the pulleys should be aligned, meaning when you are eye level with the alternator it is in a straight line with the other pulley.

The pullys visually look aligned, and thank you for your input!!!

Belt keeps coming off pully

I would think that either your belt is worn and stretched out or that the tensioner is worn and needs replacing.

Replace alternater belt

- Remove the negative battery terminal and keep it away from the battery post.
- Loosen the the lower and upper alternator bolts.
- Push the alternator towards the engine block to release the belt.
- Install the new belt, place a lever between the alternator and engine block, move away the alternator to stretch the belt, leave about half an inch of free play on the belt and tight both the bolts.

When slowing down Batt light comes on and loss of power steering. Had alternator and batt checked and came out good. this is an intermitant problem.

is the belt stretched out! or the tensioner is weak, and not holding enough pressure on drive belt. if in doubt replace the belt. there should be marks on tensioner for the belt tension. if battery and alternater are ok. then it has to be the belt, tensioner, are the battery connection clamps, clean and tight! good-day !

My belt on a 1989 suburban is scretching. how do i tighten it?

The drive belt has an automatic tensioner pulley. It will be a pulley on it's own attached to an arm. It'll be the top left pulley under the drive belt if there are only 2 at the top, or it'll be on the top righton top of the drive belt if there are 3 or 4 pulleys across the top.

Check to make sure it is moving freely. You can do this by attaching a wrench to it and moving it down if it is under the belt, or up if it is ontop of the belt. It should require a bit of force. If it doesn't move or is easy to move then it needs to be replaced. If it feels like it's moving freely and the spring seems strong then your belt is stretched past it's limit and needs to be replaced.

Alternatively it may be screeching due to a pulley seizing up. Check to make sure things like the idler pulleys or the A/C and Alternator pulleys move freely.

free the engine from the compressor and then remove the plug then first insert the drive belt on the smaller pulley side and after that try inserting the belt on the larger pulley side slowly by rotating the pulley slowly by stretching the belt with a rope
