I tried disconnecting the negative battery terminal for half an hour. It worked for one day. Then it reset itself while I was visiting friends. The installer claims they already checked the wiring.

  • thomasmoenae Mar 28, 2011

I tried disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 30 minutes. the trip meter and avg. mpg worked fine. It lasted till sunday evening. It reset itself while sitting in my friends driveway. The installers say the wiring is correct. After the meter resets itself it works for a while then for some unknown reason it resets on its own.

  • thomasmoenae Mar 31, 2011

I had the radio removed today. With the radio out I can see the wiring. The speaker wires seem to be correct. I will explain the others and maybe this can help solve the problem. Also the car has a digital dash.the trip, ave, inst mpg,and timer only reset by pushing reset when they are displayed. This is how it is supposed to work. The different guages do not reset every time I turn the car off. It seems to happen when I don't drive for a long period of time. OK now for the wiring. Radio blue with yellow stripe steering wheel remote- not used. Radio brown tel muting - not used. Radio yellow unknown. Radio red unknown. Radio blue with white stripe remote/max 200ma connected to car blue +12v amp turn on and car blue with white stripe power ant. Radio black ground connected to car black -12v and car black with white stripe amp ground.

  • thomasmoenae Apr 07, 2011

I had the radio taken out and the guages still reset.

  • thomasmoenae Apr 07, 2011

The car has the digital dash. The average mpg, trip and timer all reset without any buttons pushed. Yesterday with the radio unplugged the guages all reset during the day. the car was sitting for about 5 or 6 hours. The pos and neg wires are still connected to the plug but the plug is not connected to anything. The actual odometer works and fuel indicator is ok too.

  • thomasmoenae Apr 08, 2011

It doesn't make sense. If there is a short, why does it work normally for a day and a half? Also the gauges work fine when I'm driving, the gauges only reset when the car is parked. Ther has to be some kind of common connection between the average/instantaneous,trip and timer to reset all three while the car is parked. I think a short would most likely cause a problem when the car is moving.

  • thomasmoenae Apr 09, 2011

The procedure you describe is what I normally do at every fill up. The problem I have is: the resetting happens without any input from me.

  • thomasmoenae Apr 18, 2011

If there is a short in the cluster board why does it not reset while I am driving? It never does! Can you give me a wiring diagram with description of each wire from the car radio plug? It seems like the key fob does'nt work after the reset problem. Once I restart the car the key fob works again. So the battery is ok in the key fob.

  • thomasmoenae Apr 20, 2011

The link only showed half the diagram. I asked for the wiring on the radio plug. I plugged the original radio back in and the guages have stayed set. I'm wondering if there is some kind of security circuit for the radio? That is why I asked for the plug wiring diagram. The guages have stayed set for two days with original radio plugged in.

  • thomasmoenae Apr 21, 2011

I went back to the link. I do not have the option to enlarge the view or open link to wiring to view the schematic. What logical reason do you have for looking for shorts in the instrument cluster?

After installing the after market radio, the trip meter and average mpg resets. While installing this after market radio, if the battery was completely disconnected, then this problem occurs. When the battery is disconnected, the vehicle computer( also called ecm) looses all its settings/memory. Your average MPG should be back to normal next time you fill up.----------Also there is one more reset procedure, try this.Only disconnect the negative battery terminal of car.Let it remain unplugged for 30 minutes, then reconnect the battery terminal, this resets internal system. Then check if same problem occurs or it gets solved. If the same problem is seen then,If the trip meter and average mpg resets automatically after radio was installed, then it can be any of the radio wire getting connected to any other live wire causing the issue. Disconnect the radio wiring connection from dash and then check. If the problem, solves then, Check the radio wiring, if any wire is got crimped and cut, then insulate that wire and reconnect radio wirings as it were before. In some cars, it requires radio code, if you disconnect and reconnect radio. So take care you have your radio codes handy, before doing this.If you dont have code, then check the radio manual, which mostly comes with radio installation kit.On first or last page of manual , the radio code is mentioned. If you still do not get code, then get it from the store, from where you bought, the radio.Because with code, it will be difficult to make the radio work, after you reconnect.-------- --------- Try this possibilities, this should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Try disconnecting the radio for 48 hours and see, if the avg. mpg and trip meter are doing the same, in that 48 hours of disconnected radio system. If the problem solves, then its radio connection the problem. But if same thing happens then trip meter and avg.mpg gauges are to be checked by meter. They are detecting gas fill up and they gets reseted.Get the gauges connections checked for avg. mpg by meter. There will be short causing this.-----------
    This should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

  • raj somaiya Apr 07, 2011

If the radio is out and disconnected and still gauges reset, then there is short in gauges. When you press the reset button it should get reset. But to short, its getting reset without pressing the reset button. The gauges connection needs to be checked.Either any of the connector is got loose or getting connected to any other metal or live wire with voltage.--------
    This should be checked.Thanks.Helpmech.

If that is the case, then try to reset all the gauges as per the procedure and then set it again and then see.--------------- The digital display gauges reset procedure is as follows:----

    Driver Information Center (DIC):--

This display gives you the status of many of your vehicle's systems. The DIC is also used to display driver personalization features and warning/status messages.-----------

DISPLAY ON/OFF: Pressing this button will turn off the DIC, Electronic Climate Control (ECC), fuel data center, the fuel gage, trip odometer and odometer. While the displays are off, pressing the INFORMATION SKIP button will only turn on the DIC. If the TRIP YES button is pressed or the fuel level falls below four gallons (15.2 L), all of the displays will come back on.-----

ENG/MET: You can change the display from English (miles) to metric (kilometers) by pressing this button. The same button also changes other readings (like temperature, fuel and odometer).------

TRIP YES: By using this button, you can tell how far you've gone since you last set the trip display back to zero. To reset, press and hold the button until zeros appear. If your vehicle is domestic, the trip odometer will return to zero after 999.9 miles (1 609 km). If your vehicle is Canadian, the trip odometer will return to zero after 1 999.9 km (1,242 miles).----------

INFORMATION SKIP: Pressing this button repeatedly will display the MPG AVG, GAL FUEL

USED, AVG MPH, ENGINE RPM, BATTERY VOLTS, COOLANT TEMP and OIL LIFE LEFT.-------

TIMER: This feature is like a stopwatch, in that you can clock the time it takes to get from one point to another. To operate, press the TIMER button until TIMER OFF 00:00:00 is displayed on the DIC. Each of the fields for the hours, minutes and seconds are two numeric digits.Once TIMER OFF 00:00:00 is displayed, press the TIMER button to start the timing feature. Press the TIMER button again to stop it. If you will be starting and stopping your vehicle -- during a trip for instance -- the

TIMER feature will automatically start timing where it left off when you last stopped. To reset it, press and hold the RESET NO button until the display reads TIMER 00:00:00. Press the INFORMATION SKIP button to exit from the TIMER function.-------

RESET NO: Pressing this button will reset the MPG AVG, GAL FUEL USED, AVG MPH and OIL LIFE LEFT. Pressing RESET NO when a non-resettable display appears will cause a "recall" mode to occur. When this happens, all DIC warning messages that have been displayed since the ignition key was turned to RUN will redisplay. If no messages were displayed, a MONITORED SYSTEMS OK message will appear.---------

MPG AVG (Reset): Press the INFORMATION SKIP button to display the MPG AVG (Average Fuel

Economy), then press and hold the RESET NO button until 0.0 MPG AVG is displayed.-----

GAL FUEL USED (Reset): Press the INFORMATION SKIP button to display the GAL FUEL USED on the DIC, then press and hold the RESET NO button until 0.0 GAL FUEL USED is displayed.----

AVG MPH (Reset): Press the INFORMATION SKIP button to display the AVG MPH (Average Speed), then press and hold the RESET NO button until 0.0 AVG MPH is displayed.----

OIL LIFE LEFT (Reset): Press the INFORMATION SKIP button to display the OIL LIFE LEFT, then press and hold the RESET NO button until 100% OIL LIFE LEFT is displayed. (This only needs to be reset after you have had the oil changed.)-------

    This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

If there is automatic reset, then in that case.If all checked out ok.Then its quite possible that the cluster circuit board is having and issue. You will have to remove the cluster out, at the back of cluster there is a circuit board. On that board there are tiny components,.You will have to manually inspect the components.Any of the component is getting short. So every time its getting reset when the current passes from the cluster board of the gauges. Also before doing this, once again get the battery and its voltage checked. Also check the battery connections too.I agree, that battery is fine, so the engine starts normally. But what problem, you have mentioned. That same problem is noticed, by others to.And in that issue, the cause was weak or loose battery. So just for re confirmation, get the battery checked. If battery and its connection checked ok, then get the circuit board at the back of the gauges. There is confirm short.------------ This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

How to reset trip meter to zero for every journey on jaguar s type and also where the button to reset is please?

The two buttons that control the trip options are on the dash adjacent to the hazard warning button. Press the TRIP button untill it shows a small A or B in the top left (say average mpg) then press the upper part of the toggle switch marked RESET/CLEAR and hold it for about four seconds, this will display A or " B resetting" depending on which trip you are currently in, then everything on that trip is reset to zero (mileage/mpg/ave.speed etc). I use A for the full tank recording and B for individual journeys that I wish to record.

The info that is gatthered on your display is taken from the engine ecu which is calculating average mpg, average distance, how many miles left in your tank etc. The only faulty part is your dash insert (speedo clocks). As you probably gather all the info is gathered electronically, from your throttle movement to the altitude of the vehicle which along with many other statistics is calculating your mpg, it wont be your ecu or would experience more seroius problems, so I am betting on your dash clocks, but get it diagnosed before spending money, hope this helps.
