Question about 2001 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

The AC is not cooling. The clutch engages but no cool air, 10 amp fuse is good. Can I charge the coolant myself(shade tree mechanic)? The vehicle is a 2001 GMC Jimmy, 2 wheel drive with automatic trans. My wife would be greatly relieved. Thx, Terry

Yes you can charge it yourself if the gas canisters are sold in your country ,sounds like its just low on gas so add 500grms and that will make it work ,follow instructions on the can but basicaly you start engine turn AC on full blow then connect can to low pressure port its the smaller of the two connections and let the engine draw the gas in ,do not put more than 500 grms in as overcharging the system will cause the engine to loose power and start surging in and out as you drive

HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH LOCATED ON AC COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE LINE LEADING TO THE CONDENSOR.THE HIGH PRESSURE CUTOFF SWITCH WILL CUT OFF THE AC COMPRESSOR IF SYSTEM PRESSURE RISES TO HIGH CAUSED BY RESTRICTION IN THE REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT OR OVERHEATED CONDENSOR.MAKE SURE COOLING FAN IS RUNNING WHEN THE AC SWITCH IS ON.THE COOLING FAN KEEP CONDENSOR COOL, IF COOLING FAN DONT RUN.YOUR AC WILL STOP BLOWING COLD AIR.HAVE THE REFRIGERANT SYSTEM CHECK OUT.MAKE SURE YOUR LOW SIDE PRESSURE IS 10 - 37 PSI. THE HIGH SIDE PRESSURE SHOULD BE 112 - 210 PSI. CHECK THE AC COMPRESSOR CLUTCH FUSE AND RELAY.

A local garage mechanic says the clutch has stopped working on ac that is why it blows hot air instead of cool says it will cost $900. to fix cause I have to buy the whole ac unit does this sound correct?...

have you tried charging the ac system? most ac compressors have a pressure switch that will not allow the relay to engage the clutch if the coolant pressure is low. $15 can of r134a and maybe a $20 Haynes manual is well worth the price difference, eh?

2000 chevy truck 5.3 liter. air conditioner works 10-15 min then stops. clutch and clutch pressure switch good, freon level good, batt and alternator good??

After the clutch disengages ( when it's not suppose to )check the voltage on the + output terminal on the clutch relay, (inside the fuse box under the hood) if you have voltage there, check the voltage at the clutch, if you have voltage there too, its the clutch. The clutch gets worn and will engage when cool, but fails after heat builds up. Check this by tapping the face of the clutch with the ac on, if it's simply a worn clutch it will likely engage for a while.

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air

I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Good luck

Airconditioning not working ststem charged no power to compressor fuses ok light comes on to say system switched on

Yeah, your magnetic AC fly wheel doesnot work, need to replace the switch. Take to an AC repair shop, not for tree shade mechanics to do. Good?

AIR CONDITIONER WILL NOT COOL WHEN IDLED

Typical problem of R-134 freon. It just doesn't perform well at idle, though hardware changes over the years have improved performance in later models.

However, be sure to cover the bases. Check freon charge with gauge set. Don't guess. Make sure the pressures are correct and that cooling fan is functional and nothing restricting air flow at condenser & radiator. High pressure from car wash wands can fold-over the cooling fins at radiator thus restricting air flow. I suspect all this is good but you should make certain to remove any doubt.

A/C does not work.

Any chain auto parts store will have aftermarket manuals from Haynes and/or Chilton for your Blazer and they are a good investment at <$20 US.
They contain all the information a shade-tree mechanic needs.
