    Fig. Installing A/C & alternator belt-2.7L engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  4. Loosen the tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt.
  5. Rotate tensioner clockwise to allow enough slack to remove the belt

To install:
  1. With the tensioner in a slack position, install the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor/alternator belt on the pulleys. Slip the belt over the idler last.
  2. Adjust the drive belt tension.
  3. Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  4. Lower the vehicle.

Power Steering Belt
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  3. Remove the air conditioning compressor/alternator belt.
  4. Loosen belt adjusting bolt. It is not necessary to loosen the pivot bolt on the power steering pump. There is a bushing incorporated into the power steering pump/bracket that allows it to pivot.

I changed the alternator on my 99 alero an now it makes a loud sweeking niose is there a way to tighten the belt

LOOSE BELT MORE LIKELY YOU HAVE A BAD BELT TENSIONER.A BAD BELT TENSIONER WILL CAUSE BELT TO SLIP.WHEN THAT HAPPENS ALTERNATOR CANT SPIN FAST ENOUGH TO KEEP BATTERY CHARGE.AND IF YOUR WATER PUMP DONT SPIN FAST ENOUGH ENGINE WILL OVERHEAT AND YOU WILL HAVE POWER STEERING PROBLEMS ALSO HAVE DRIVE BELT TENSIONER CHECK OUT AT A GARAGE..

My 90 bronco 5.0 keeps eating sepentine belts. what causes this and when i put a new one one it sqeels loud... whY?

Either tensioner is bad and not putting enough tension on belt or one of the accessories driven are faulty. Best way is to remove belt and try spinning each pulley separately and feel for resistance or rough feel of bearings. Don't forget AC. Check it before removing belt and If your experiencing the squeel more when AC is on, then not enough tension on belt, or AC system should be checked.

Car is overheating. I think the wrong tensioner pulley is installed. we bought the right one according to the parts store. if the tensioner pulley is not providing the right tension on the belt can it...

First off if your belt is slipping enough for the water pump to not function it should be making one heck of a racket.
look at the belt (carefully and with protective wear) and see if the water pump pulley is spinning when the engine is running.
more likely your culprit may be a thermostat or if when the belt came off the last time the vehicle overheated, it may have cause internal damage, head gasket etc.

I need a belt routing diagram for a 2000 ford taurus 24v dohc engine. Know where I can find one on the web? (No sticker under the hood. And I was dumb enough not to pay attention when I took it off.)

OK, one doesn't need a belt routing diagram to reinstall a new belt.

Just route the belt so that one by one you put the ribbed part of the belt up against the ribbed pulleys, and the smooth part of hte belt up against the smooth pulleys. Do this until one arrives at the tensioner and release tension with a breaker bar to put the belt on the final tensioner pulley.

Check that the tensioner has enough spring load for the belt to maintain the right friction against all of the serpentine pulleys.

That's all there is to it.

Hi we have a kia sedona 2000year and 2.9 diesel, exec. auto. it came with half the engine in the boot, we have skimed the head and rebuilt it just the new cam belt just wont tighten enough we have fully...

the cam belt should have a little slack in it,, about 1/2 inch over its longest run, its not like a fan belt witch should be tight, but check the idler bearing are not worn out,,and i do hope this is a new belt for this car,,,if your using the old belt,,,dont! fit a new one on it or it could brake on you, and that would be another engine rebuild on your hands,,,

Replacing serpentine belt on 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan, do I need to access tensioner pully from under the car? The tool from the shop won't move far enough from the top to release the tension. Thank You

This is the procedure for 3.3 and 3.8L engines:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle and safely support it with jackstands.
  3. Remove the right front splash shield.
  4. Release tension by rotating the tensioner clockwise.
  5. Remove the belt and install a replacement.
  6. Proper belt tension is maintain by the dynamic tension.
  7. Install the right front splash shield. Lower the front of the vehicle.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

HELP! with Serpentine Belt Installation

hi Debbie I will try to help. use the detensioner tool and put it on the tensioner pully and turn the bolt clockwise to release the tension. If you don't turn it far enough clockwise you won't get all of the tension off the belt after that the belt should slide right off GOOD LUCK!

How do you loosen the serpentine belt

That wasn't right though. There is a 1/2 slot for a 1/2 inch breaker bar and when two holes are lined up you stick a drill bit or similar peice through to lock it in place till you get the belt routed then pull back alittle bit on the breaker bar to remove tension from the drill bit . Remove the drill bit and release tension on breaker bar and remove it to put tension on the belt. Then check alignment , positioning, routing of the belt visually.

1994 honda prelude si belts system

Some are tough to get on, but if you're bottoming out the tensioner then double check to see if you have the right belt. If it's one of those "this is the belt the guy at the auto parts store said" situations, then take it back, grab a different guy or gal, and have them pull another belt to compare.
