On a automatic it is important to check the transmission fluid this is done when the vehicle has reached operating temperature.Dodge is good at listing the type of fluid they require on the transmission dipstick, vehicle in park car at idle at it must be within the specific mark they have listed on the dipstick, when the fluid is low there is not enough pressure to trtansfer power for a clutch engagement and it will flare and slam in gear.Check your fluid level,

Odd question. You only have a pump,a couple hoses, steering gear/rack and a cooler. Look over the entire system!!

My owner's manual specified an automatic transmission fluid type for my power steering. Is this an error?

No, it's usual for power steering fluid to be the same as transmission fluid. they both are hydraulic type fluid with similar system requirements.

good luck

My 2004 dodge stratus won't steer

Well it's one of three things:
1. The fluid has leaked out and you should check for leaks and check the fluid level.
2. If the level is fine your power steering pump could be bad.
3. If the level is fine your rack and pinion could be bad.
