Usually counter clockwise, but it could be seized and you dont want to break it, spray it with some liquid wrench penetrating fluid and let it sit a bit, or you can heat it carefully with a torch.

Remove a starter

  • Remove the negative and positive lead on the battery.
  • Locate the starter under the vehicle. The starter will be located to the right of the motor on the bottom. Access the bolts comfortably from underneath the truck.
  • Remove the bottom bolt with a socket wrench. The ground cable will be attached. Save the bolt for reinstalling the starter.
  • Unbolt the positive cable on top of the starter. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt.
  • Unbolt the top of the starter with a socket wrench. The starter will be loose.
  • Pull the starter straight out. Use both hands to pull out and forward as the starter is heavy. Pull forward and lower to the ground.
Installing the Starter
  • Position the new starter in place. Match up the starter to the designated bolt holes on the mounts.
  • Start the top bolt. Turn the bolt clockwise but do not tighten the starter down.
  • Start the bottom bolt. Ensure the negative cable is run through the bolt before starting. Do not tighten the bolt.
  • Tighten the top bolt with the socket wrench. Tighten it snug. Repeat the same for the bottom bolt. Ensure both bolts are tight.
  • Tighten the positive cable to the starter. Ensure the cable is snug to the fitting.
  • Connect the terminals to the battery. Ensure the vehicle cranks. The starter will engage without hesitation if done correctly.

There should be three bolts on the starter motor. The all face the same direction and should be in a pattern with one on the bottom, one up and to the side and one directly above the bottom one at the very top of the starter. You may have to move the exhaust pipe or certain lines to get enough room to get it out to test it. Let me know if you have questions with this. You are going to want to get it from underneath the car

Ford 5.4 motor will not turn over new battery, starter, tried turning over by hand will turn over in one direction only but not the direction starter wants to spin

you have something in the cylinder that is not allowing the piston to go past top dead centre.. Pull the spark plugs and borrow/ buy a small inspection camera that has a lcd display and see what is stopping the piston movement. Another idea is to remove the bell housing inspection cover and look for a loose bolt or gear teeth in the ring gear that are binding up the starter pinion

It is a 3 bolt starter for sure, And yes the bracket has to be removed, Id advise removing the oil filter as well, But it can be done without it..

I can'nt find the top mounting bolt on my 1974 vw super beetles starter i cant seem to get to it

The starter motor is held in position by 2 bolts, the top one also secures the engine to the gearbox. The head of this bolt is a special D shape which engages into the body of the Starter motor. To undo, from the rear o/side wing, reach down behind the fan housing and you'l; find a nut (17mm) with a small amount of the bolt coming through it. Use suitable spanner to undo (turning away from you) If not been off foe a while may find that after a few revolutions all starts to turn. This just means head of bolt has become disengaged. reposition with a long screwdriver and start again.

if the solenoid  is bad you can test this by taking some thing and crossing the terminals on the solenoid  and then if trying to start it dose not work it's the starter in that case remove the starter as a whole (on Toyota's is much than just removing the dead solenoid as compared to  domestic trucks) don't forget to remove the access panel on the passenger side fender well to make this go much easier and the bolts for the starter are on very bottom and top bolted directly to the bell/fly-wheel housung
