REPLACE A 2.2 RAV4 HEAD GASKET?

Replacing the head gasket on any car is a LOT of work. You have to remove pretty much the top half of the engine. Also, if the head gasket blew because it overheated then you may need to have the head resurfaced. You should be able to get an estimate from an auto repair shop. If you want to do it yourself then set aside lots of time, take photos as you disassemble the engine so you can remember how to put everything back, and be prepared to buy some tools that you might not already have.

Also.........

Best Practices
  • To prevent an expensive, recurring problem, the integrity of the entire cooling system should be inspected and tested when a head gasket is replaced.
  • During this repair, the cylinder head(s) will need to be inspected and machined. Additional repairs may be needed after the inspection, which can add several hundred dollars to the repair and are not included in the RepairPal estimate.
  • Cylinder head gasket replacement often occurs when the engine has high mileage; several additional parts may be needed during the repair. These may include cooling system components (hoses, water pump, radiator, thermostat, etc.) vacuum lines, timing belt, ignition wires, and more. These will be in addition to the RepairPal estimate above.

Sorry, my 2002 hyundia accent smokes white out of the tailpipe really bad and my spark plugs have some oil on them i was told that i need new gaskets but i dont know what kind?

White smoke usually indicates coolant being burned up. This would be likely caused by the head gasket failing. The head gasket is I between the head and the engine block. This is a major service and will require the disassembly of half the engine in order to service.

I have a blown head gasket & my carkeeps overheating

You had better not drive it at all, get the head gasket replaced as soon as you can, if you drive it there will be water in the oil and your metal will not be lubricated in the engine, and it will lock up the motor completely. just look at your oil and it will be brown and fluffy like chocolate pudding. DONT drive it

Where is the head gasket located at on a 1994 grand marquis

The head gasket (in your case gaskets) is located on the top of the engine block under the engine cylinder head which is under the Camshaft cover which is the very top of the engine. This car is a V8 engine so it has 2 heads and 2 head gaskets, one on each side of the engine. It is a very expensive job to replace head gaskets.

Blown head gasket

I would change both, as well as use new head bolts. Make sure your heads are not warped or cracked, especially the one that is leaking. There may not be any need to change the head if it is not cracked. These are prone to blowing a gasket especially after 150K miles or so. It will not cost a huge additional amount to change both head gaskets since the engine will have to be disassembled down to the heads anyway. Hope this helps you, Rick

Head gasket on 1989 300SE

Hi Kevin

You have done well, with the 255.OOO mls.!

You could be opening a can of worms, to start stripping the engine and just doing just the head gasket.

I expect other major engine mechanical fixes needed, are not far behind.

Has your mechanic done a carbon monoxide test on the cooling system, and found it faulty ?
Or is the oil filler cap milky, or is there coolant staining down the block ?
Do you top up the coolant much ?

Let me know !

As its running OK at present, I suggest 1 jar of Bars Leaks Coolant Additive, in the cooling system, and monitor your coolant and oil levels for now, and start saving for a newer model !

Good Luck !

Don´t forget to give me a FixYa rating...... Please !

John.
