Squealing noise when i crank up and smell of something burning

then something is frozen with in the Serpentine Belt System, the Belt is squealing on the Frozen Pulley Raise the Hood Start car Look for the Pulley Not turning, there are about 5 different Pulleys, so it could be any one of them, starting With the Alternator Which is the Most common , then You may have 2 idler Pulleys, A Power Steering Pulley and A Water Pump Pulley, Can't tell You which one with out seeing it. My SUV makes a grinding noise and has a burning smell when I lift the hood. What could it be and how would I repair it?

Take the belt off, and see if that pulley wheel spins freely, If it is seized up, that is where the burning smell came from-belt was running across the seized pulley. If that wheel pulley runs the water pump, you will need to replace it.

My heater works but is blowing a burnt rubber smell out of vents in a 1995 cadillac deville??? anybody kno? heater core??

Your blower motor could be overheating, but that usually smells like a distinct plastic burning. I's day its more likely a problem under your hood. I'd start with the belt and pulleys. Just pop the hood and look around your belt. If you see bits of rubber you found your problem. It will probably be a belt, pulley and/or tensioner that needs replacing.

I have a 2002 taurus se and the fan belt broke, i replaced it and it broke again, i smell a foul odor coming from the vents

Check for a seized pulley

With the belt removed turn each pulley by hand, they should all move smoothly without barely noticeable play. I suspect that you may find the idler pulley is either locked in position or locks up occasionally. When turning the pulleys try putting some up or down pressure on them.

The smell you are detecting is most likely the smell of the burned belt. They do tend to give off a smell that keep on giving long after the bet is gone.

Rubber burning smell and smoke

It sounds like a pulley froze up. Pop the hood have someone start the car while you are looking at the pulleys, you should be able to see the problem.

Putting on top belt

you dont need remove the fan or the fan shrow you can put the belt on by looping the belt partially on a fan blade and then turnning the fan blade kinda like a bicycle chain and if it is the power steering belt there is a guard over the top of the pulley just remove the 2 10 milimeter bolts and it will come right off
