There are 2 belts. One goes around the Crankshaft. the Power Steering Pump and the Air Conditioner Compressor (if equipped) and the other belt goes around the Crankshaft, The Alternator and the Water Pump. You can have your local parts supplier verify that you have the correct belt for the vehicle by calling them and giving them the number on the belt. Also make sure that you are installing the belt in the correct position. i.e. putting the alternator belt on the alternator and not on the power steering, etc.

How to replace an alternato belt on a 2000 pontic grand am is it the sameas most others ? loosen the pullys and put belt on and tighten back up leaving the belt a little loose?

There should be a automatic tesnioner IF you are talking about a Pontiac? the belt should never be "loose". no pullies to loosen. A 95 Protege, yes you have to loosen and tighten the alternator, the adj bolts are tough to get at.

It may be the tensioner pully, or the idler pully. Check the alternator for play.

The alternator belt keeps breaking on a 2000 mazda 626 it has been replaced 4 times and all of the mechanics say they cannot find any prolbems no bearing prolbems no pulley misalligment

What they mean is there is no obvious problems. What else runs off that belt? Check for misalignment there. What makes it break? Does it happen after a long trip ( 2 hrs. highway driving) or at timed intervals ( every month, 6wks)?
Carefully check all the pulley's for sharp edges or bump outs into the belt. If you find anything use a small file and smooth them out. They can cut or pinch your belt and weaken it so it breaks over time.
Check the pulley alignment with the engine running where you can see all the pulleys and belts at the same time. This might mean crawling under the car. Vary the engine speed while you watch and take it up to cruising speed. You are looking for something to change, i.e a pulley to start wobbling. It could be a mounting bracket that bends at higher revs that needs to be replaced or strengthened.
Hope this helps.

Belts making noise

Simply check is to replace the serpentine belt tensioner. Looks like this:

Another reason you might have alternator going to die. Try to rotate the alternator rotor without belt on it. If you need to use force no free rotation, replace the alternator.
Please kindly let me know if you need more info
Good Luck
