Auto zone reader will sometimes not read codes. take it to your local garage and ask them to plug into it with an updated reader. i dont charge to read a code and i would hope they dont either. the o2 sensor could cause bad gas mileage. whens the last tune up done? check air filter. plugs? also check air in tires. low tires can cost fuel mileage as well. hope this helps

FREE can be many things...maybe o2 sensor...if u are limited with money as most of us r....IF ITS RUNNING GOOD...EVERYTHING IS WORKING PROPERLY...SEE LITTLE TO NO DIFFERENCE ON GAS MILEAGE...LEAVE IT BE...I KNOW...THIS IS NO SOLUTION ONLY ADVICE....i have not had a car that the light has not come on and even put black tape to cover because at night it was very bright....keep check on attention to fluid levels....make sure battery is charging properly and drive on.....can this lead to other problems...yes...will it...don't know...have a friend that has been drivivg for 2 years with his light on...its the o2 sensor that happens to be one of those that r very expensive...advance zone will do a FREE check to tell u what the problem may be...try that and go from there...good luck!

Codes 02 sensor or vac leak We got gas one day the next day the check engine light came on.. we had it scanned and it came back O2 or vac leak the guy at auto zone asked us if the gas cap was on.and we...

You should be able to get the exact code of the fault (DCTxxx). From this fault you should be able to determine if the problem is O2 related or Vacuum. To me it sounds like it is vacuum related, because the computer only performs a vacuum test periodically (it only does this at certain coolant and outdoor air temperatures). When these conditions are met, the computer performs a check and if it doesn't pass the check engine lit will eliminate. In order for the test to pass the computer monitors the vacuum created in the gas tank and if it doesn't hold over a certain time it flags the error. This is why you need to make sure the gas cap is tightened.

If the gas cap is not the problem, it is probably related to the EVAP system. This system has a valve which opens and closes to perform the test by the computer. I have cleaned a couple of these valves on the older Luminas and it solved the problem. Dealers will insist that you need to replace the valves or EVAP canister. As for the location, it is probably behind the drivers rear tire atleast it was on the older luminas.

My 1999 Dodge Dakota RT will not pass inspection. The check engine light stays on. I changed the O2 sensor and the speed sensor. What else can I do???

Check engine lights are designed to turn on because of an fuel/emission problem. You changed the O2 sensor, ****have you reset the computer by disconnected the battery for about 10-15 minutes?**** After you reconnect it drive for several miles to see if it turns on. Run the gas tank empty and when you pump gas try not to pump at gas stations that have E10 mixed with regular gas. BP and shell stations are known for that and can trip the O2 sensor. Try pumping at a gas station like the exxon. If you still have problems with the check engine light, try cleaning the mass air flow sensor ( its located after the air filter and before the throttle body). Also check the gas cap, making sure there aren't any leaks or signs of cracks in it. The best thing to do is to take it a Auto Zone or Advanced Auto and have it diagnosed for free. That could give you a better idea on what to look for if none of these things fix it

1987 Dodge Caravan getting poor gas milage

If you suddenly are getting poor gas mileage your O2 (oxygen) sensor may have failed. The O2 sensor helps dictate how rich or lean the fuel mixture is. If it fails the engine's computer defaults to a rich mixture so not to burn a valve or run too hit. This can be checked and if need be easily replaced. And yes if the van is over-do for a routine tune-up this is always a good investment. Make sure to check the air filter too, if she's dirty the engine will starve for air and get poor mileage.

I hope this may have assited you,

Does the fuel filter affect gas mileage

there are lots of things that can affect gas mileage. if the spark plugs and wires are worn out, the air filter being dirty, dirty fuel filter, proper inflation of the tires, O2 sensors that are contaminated and performing poorly. the first thing to do would be that the engine is in good working order, as in no check engine light, no misfire, etc. a poorly running engine will put out terrible gas mileage. then you can start with the things i listed.

I have a Honda Accord 2003, how can i fix a downstraem Oxygen sensor.. does this affect the gas cosumtion performance.. how can i fix this.. Help.!

o2 sensor is very important part to the engine when it come to the fuel economy. o2 sensor send information to the computer (ECU) which compute and calculate ratio of burnt exhaust gases. if the engine is not run properly either is too lean or too rich the o2 sensor will detect it as the car will triger the check engine light. you can drive the vehicle which will not hurt it as long you can tolerated the light however the car will get terrible gas mileage and poor performance as the ECU will try to lean the engine out itself. o2 sensor is fairly cheap to replace and fix. Let assume the car get 30 mpg on the high way, running with check engine light/bad o2 sensor will change the gas mileage to 18-25 mpg. If the car is V6 make sure you replace o2 on both side. good luck!

Check engine light - 240 enfgine running rich

It could be a number of things but must be diagnosed via computer code check. If you are unable to do so yourself, find a reputable Volvo mechanic. It could be the air mass meter, a bad O2 sensor or something related. Mine turned out not to be the air meter but a bad ground wire going to it. Didn't find out until $400.00 later.
