Question about 2002 BMW 3 Series

2 Answers

1994 BMW 318i just stopped running. I was able to restart and continue on my trip. 3 km further on it just stopped again. Would not restart. Towed to BMW Dealer where it would not restart for them until the next day - has not been a problem starting since then. Vehicle is still at the dealers as they are trying to figure it out.

Is this something related to the engine computer?

  • bmdpick Mar 26, 2011

What does the engine control module (ECM) do? If the ECM is faulty - what is the solution?

    Ignition system

    High-tension spark

Checking - distributorless ignition - figure below

Note: Disconnect injector multi-plugs before cranking tests, to avoid damage to catalytic converter.

    1. Ensure ignition switched OFF.

    2. Disconnect one high-tension lead from spark plug.

    3. Connect test spark plug to high tension lead.

    4. Using insulated pliers, hold test spark plug 6 mm from suitable earth.

    5. Briefly crank engine.

    6. Check for strong blue sparks.

    7. If no spark is visible: Carry out high-tension circuit component checks.

    Ignition timing firing order: 1 - 3 - 4 - 2

Ignition timing electronically controlled. No adjustment possible. Ensure high-tension leads are connected correctly.

    Ignition coil

Note: Secondary resistance can not be checked.

Checking supply voltage - figure below

    1. Ensure ignition switched OFF.

    2. Disconnect ignition coil multi-plug.

    3. Switch ignition ON.

    4. Check voltage between harness multi-plug terminal no.# 3 and earth. Good result = Resistance = zero.

Checking earth connection - figure above

    1. Ensure ignition switched OFF.

    2. Disconnect ignition coil multi-plug.

    3. Check resistance between ignition coil terminals no.# 2 & 1 / 5 / 6 / 7. Good result = Resistance = 0,8 ohms.

Checking primary resistance - figure below

    1. Ensure ignition switched OFF.

    2. Disconnect ignition coil multi-plug.

    3. Check resistance between ignition coil terminals no.# 2 & 1 / 5 / 6 / 7. Good result = Resistance = 0,8 ohms.

Fuel pressure checking - figures below

    1. Ensure ignition switched OFF.

    2. Connect pressure gauge between fuel supply pipe and fuel rail [1] - first picture.

    3. Remove fuel pump relay [1] - second picture.

    4. Bridge fuel pump relay base terminals no.# 2 and no.# 6 with a switched lead - second picture.

    5. Operate switch to run fuel pump.

    6. Compare system pressure indicated with that specified.

    7. Disconnect vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator.

    8. Connect vacuum pump to fuel pressure regulator.

    9. Apply specified vacuum.

    10. Operate switch to run fuel pump.

    11. Compare regulated pressure indicated with that specified.

Vacuum OFF: System pressure = 3,5 bar.

Vacuum 0,5 bar: Regulated pressure = 3 bar.

Fuel delivery rate checking - figures above & figure below

    1. Ensure ignition switched OFF.

    2. Disconnect fuel return pipe from fuel pressure regulator [1] - first picture.

    3. Connect test pipe to fuel pressure regulator.

    4. Insert end of pipe into measuring flask - third picture.

    5. Remove fuel pump relay [1] - second picture.

    6. Bridge fuel pump relay base terminals no.# 2 and no.# 6 with a switched lead - second picture.

    7. Operate switch to run fuel pump.

    Delivery rate = 1,03 litres / 30 sec.

Yes, the last piece out of order is the "engine computer" = Engine Control Module (ECM)

Well because its a auto box you could have a band or pump problem which is in the gear box and is bathed in auto matic fluid oil and that could be your problem as the bands do wear down fast on a lot of cars and BMW with there power that could be you.
So take it to a auto box people and get it checked out.
