Question about 1998 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

My 98 windstar keeps shifting from 3rd gear back into 2nd. When cold it shifts fine but after about 10 minutes of driving it gets stuck in 2nd gear. Would changing the fluid and filter help with this problem??

Hi

First confirm that the idle speed is reasonable. Then, check engine and transmission mounts as you would on any car. Other than that there are the bellow factors as to why it is hard to sift gear from 2nd to 3rd or any other gear :-

Low Transmission Fluid...The first thing a car owner must do when the transmission begins to shift hard is checking the transmission fluid. Several things can be determined by doing so, including finding your car low on transmission fluid. If this is the case, all you'll need to do is fill the transmission fluid back up to the full level on the dipstick, If there is no dipstick on the car, crawl under the car and find the fluid level plug on the transmission itself. Remove the fluid level plug while having a clear rag or paper under the plug on the ground. The fluid level must be even with the height of the plug, if the level is not even with the plug, then transmission fluid needs to be filled.

Transmission Fluid Signs...Another reason for shifting hard can be determined by signs found in the transmission fluid. Look for small pieces of metal in the transmission fluid. This is a sure sign that the gears inside the transmission are wearing excessively. If the transmission fluid is extremely dark or black in color, it signals that the transmission is full of sludge, requiring the transmission fluid to be drained and replaced. Another sign is a burnt smell coming from the transmission fluid. This indicates that the transmission is running hotter than it should be, making it difficult to shift.

Transmission Filter...The transmission filter may be another reason behind shifting problems. The transmission filter collects debris from the gears of the transmission and is damaged by small metal particles that come from the gears. These particles can tear the transmission filter or clog the transmission filter, making it difficult to shift from gear to gear. Drain the transmission fluid and remove the transmission drain pan to gain access to the transmission filter. Replacing the transmission filter is the only cure for this shifting problem.

I have a 98 chevy silverado. My transmission only has 2nd,3rd and reverse if you manually put it into 1st it still has 2nd gear in 1st&2nd gear and 3rd gear works in 3rd and drive only. Nothing higher

Remove trans pan and inspect shift solenoids. These are prone to come apart and visual inspection often finds the problem. Replacement units include a bracket to keep this from happening again.

Hi, I have a 98 Windstar that recently began having transmission problems. When we first drive it starts out fine but once we've driven several miles it will get stuck in 2nd gear.

The switches inside need to be replaced they are hanging up do this now before you ruin the clutches it will go back to normal shifting and work fine change all pressure torque lockup and shift switches diy for about 125.00 with fluid filter cost and back to normal shifting and a happy van and crew make sure vans not running hot burning fluid otherwise will happen again high temp burned fluid damages switches ability to work

I have a 98 s10 pick up with a 4 speed auto it drives fine in drive but if i ever stick it in second gear to start out it slips but if i stick it in first fine shift into second fine and so forth what...

On the 4L60E transmission, when you put it in manual 2, It will take off in 2nd and never shift, Not 1st. So it will be slow to accelerate. This is helpful when stuck in snow or mud. It keeps you from spinning the tires and gives you more traction.
