Question: I have a 2000 dodge ram 24 valve Cummings turbo Deisel, I am having surging at take off from a dead stop that only happens after driving for 20-30 minutes. If I let it cool down for an hour or so the problem is gone. Doesn't happen all the time, and only in 2nd gear and reverse. Being told it's because I'm driving it like a gas vehicle, I revved it up to 3000 today and it didn't happen. Am I supposed to rev the engine to 2500-3000 on a manual trans before releasing the clutch? I do understand that you need higher rpm's but 3000 seems excessive, also being told that my head gasket leaking is due to

will the faulty gasket cause surging while taking off from a stop?

  • dmcstanley Mar 26, 2011

I am being blamed for blowing the head gasket by not revving the engine high enough, is this possible or can the head gasket cause the surging? The surging happens after driving for a period of time, I don't understand why it would do it intermittently.seems if I don't rev the engine high enough, it would do it every time I take off. I take off and drive the same most every time. Please answer all questions, thanks again for ur help

You shouldn't have to rev the engine at all to release the clutch as diesels have enough torque at idle to release the clutch and start rolling and no, not revving the engine couldn't have caused the head gasket to leak. The leaking head gasket is most likely the cause of your surging tho. It will need to be replaced soon before further damage is done to the engine.

It does sound like a faulty gasket
if a vacuum gauge is used on each cylinder you can tell if you have a bad head gasket. The needle on the vacuum gauge will sould a very unstable reading if the gasket is faulty. The needle will look like its shaking back and forth while checking that cylinder. These gauges are sold from $10 and up at most auto parts stores

I have a 1998.5 dodge 5.9 cummings diesel 24 valve factory stock, the fuel lift pump is not on engine or fuel lines, did dodge mount it in fuel tank?

It was located on the drivers side of engine close to fuel filter housing, but dodge has been selling and installing kits that change it to the in tank style for quite some time, so if not on block it must have been converted at some time.

Turbo just stopped working,no pressure on guage,no warning,2005 f-250 superduty,2wd,cummings turbo deisel,85,000 miles

A Cummings? Are you sure it is not a Powerstroke? If it is a powerstroke the check the little hose on the passenger side of the intake to make sure it is connected to the nipple on the manifold. Also check on the connector on the turbo that has two wires going to the vgt solinoid. Make sure it is plugged in.
