Question about 1993 GMC Suburban

2 Answers

I have a 1993 GMC 4x4 350 suburban that keeps discharging the battery. I have replaced the alternator and still discharge the battery. I was told that it needed a voltage regulator but can not locate where it goes.

The voltage regulator is built into the Alternator. Take out the Alternator and have it
tested at your local Auto Parts store (they all do it free). This will tell you if the Alternator
is your problem or if you need to check elsewhere.

Im not sure they are right about that. Most alternators on Gm products have the regulator built in to the alternator. So if you replaced the alternator that shouldnt be the problem. That leaves the usual suspect causes of ghostly battery drain: dome lights, rear cargo lights, maybe an under hood work light. Have you had the battery checked as well? maybe its just having trouble keeping a charge. You dont say how old the battery is. Anyway, not sure about the regulator thing. I ve own a couple of suburbans and their alternators had the internal regulators.

Brand new battery and alternator but keeps turning off. I have to keep jumping the battery. What's wrong?

Check the alternator output with a multimeter. You should get14volts out of the alternator (I purchase brand new alternator and sometimes there no good), it happens, check the big wire coming out of the alternator, if you dont get at lease 14volts it's no good (it's got to generate more than 12volts).good luck.

I have a 2004 lincoln navigator v8 and I just replaced the alternator and the wiring harness but the battery keeps going dead any idea what it is

batteries can self discharge from internal failure and this can be checked by a battery load test
it may prove that replacing the alternator was not necessary
however on some units
there is a diode that stops the battery discharging back through the alternator when everything is off
wrong battery terminal installation or flashing will damage the diode
best now to have the reason for the discharge investigated by ab accredited auto electrician starting at the battery

Battery getting discharg and not starting,if started then not taking load, mechanic told me rectifier problem ,tell the solution.

Not knowing all the details my guess would be to replace the alternator. The alternator can have a shorted rectifier which would cause the battery to drain.

Battery keeps charging when car is shut off. Our garage has tested all components but can't find what is charging my battery.

There will be nothing charging the battery as that is the job of the alternator and if it is not working then the voltmeter is reading a discharge as a charge . Check meter polarity

You most likely have a bad alternator that is not charging the battery properly. Have the battery charged fully and replace the alternator. This should fix your problem.

My 1993 Buick Century was not driven for 4 months, and now I have tried to drive it and now it stalls and the battery has to be recharged to get it going again. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do....

car batteries cannot be allowed to stay discharged for long ... since there are things that still draw current when the car is turned off then the battery will go dead over time unless its charged periodically .. if it stays discharged for long then it will be perminantly damaged ... so the battery will have to be replaced ... you can usually take the car to an auto parts place .. they often will install a new battery free if you purchase it from them .... they can also test your alternator at the same time .. ... if you cant get the car to run enough to get to an auto parts place then perhaps you can install a new battery yourself and then have the parts place check your installation and alternator ...

My emergency brake light came on at the same time as my battery light. I turned off the heater and raideo and drove home and parked it. Tried to start it this morning and my battery discharged over night i...

Not sure why the brake light came on unless it is warning of the lack of ABS but it can be a failed alternator causing the overnight discharge. Alternators have semiconductor diode in them and when one fails, it can easily drain the battery within hours.
If you can get it moving, drive to one of the chain auto parts stores; they will check your alternator and battery while in the vehicle.

My 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 has been losing battery charge

Try to locate the cause of the discharge current as below:-

While vehicle electrical system shutdown as for overnight storage, connect an ammeter (with suitable current capacity and sensitivity) across the main ground connection between the battery -ve terminal and vehicle chassis/frame - (-ve of the ammeter to -ve battery terminal post, +ve to vehicle frame),
Carefully disconnect the main battery ground cable from the chassis,
The ammeter will now measure the battery discharge current - a discharge current in the order of 0.5 amp or more is of concern.
If all is well, the current draw should not exceed 50- 100 mA.
Note- Do not switch on any load while ammeter is connected, as ammeter damage or overload will occur.
If an excessive discharge current is observed, remove all fuses etc to eliminate / locate cause.

I have a 2007 GMC Envoy. I've had to jumpstart the SUV for the last 2 days. Could it be the battery?

Either the battery, the battery cables/connections, the alternator or alternator cables/connections (in the extreme a drain could cause battery discharge). Have battery tested. Look for signs of corrosion around cables. If vehicle won't start after sitting but will restart when turned off, suspect battery. If won't restart after driving, suspect alternator.
