My starter has for shims on it an it started good for a day now starter just spin when i turn the key on a 1983 buick regal

If your 1983 Buick Regal has a good battery but makes a clicking noise and will not start, you should check and make sure its getting spark, check your starter, also check your battery connections, and the starter cables.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Im changing my starter and i am not sure what amount of shims i am suppose to use before i bolt the start on.

If you removed the old starter and there were no shims then this will stand true with the new one and if there were shims you should either reuse those or get ones like it what will happen if you dont have shims in the starter is the flywheel will most likely not allow the starter to engage fully and you car will not start the shims are to keep this from happening.

How to replace my starter for a 1998 buick regal

Hello spitandspat,

Here is a step by step. As always care must be taken when lifting a car, proper support is necessary.

The starter is on the side of the engine closest to the radiator.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable and isolate it so it can't make contact with the battery connection.
2. Raise and properly support the car.
3. Disconnect the wires from the starter.
4. Remove the plastic shield from the bell housing to expose the starter bolts.
5. Remove the starter.
Note: If there are shims under the starter you will need to replace them as needed.
Note: Compare the old starter with the new starter before installing are two different starters for this application.

Installation is the reverse of the removal.

Regards,
netvan

How do i remove the starter?

Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. As required, remove nuts from A/C
compressor, exhaust system and/or engine braces, adjacent to starter. On M/T models, remove bending
brace from around starter (if equipped). On all models, remove other items that may interfere with
removal of starter.
2. If necessary, remove nut from engine cross brace. Using pry bar between upper engine mount and engine,
pry rearward and support engine.
3. If necessary, remove oil filter, air induction tube and cooling fan. Remove flywheel inspection cover (if
equipped). Remove starter solenoid terminal "S" nut and battery cable nut. Separate wiring from starter.
Remove starter mounting bolts. Remove shims and note arrangement for reassembly. Remove starter.
Installation
Before installing starter onto engine, tighten inner solenoid terminal nuts to ensure they are secure in cap.
Starter failure may occur due to terminal or cap damage. Install starter and wiring. Ensure shims are installed in
original location.

the starter is failing and needs to be replaced... next time it just clicks..... hit the starter with a hammer..... it should start and that will confirm that is the issue.
