Hi you can replace the timing belt in about two hours or so , if the car still runing good ,remove the covers and mark the timing marks whith a light color paint so you will see them easy, now align the timing marks , write the position in a piece of paper , procede to replace the belt, timing marks can look like dots ,or triangles be sure you aling them perfectly before taking the old belt out.good luck.....

You will need to get in behind the Timing belt to do this

You might want to search this out online on a Honda forum. Or get the Honda Service Manual.
Plan on this as an all day job.
If you are in there you might want to do a new timing belt job as well.
Be careful if you've never worked on engine timing - You have a 'Bad Day here, and it is a very BAD DAY'

I just changed the timing chain of my 2000 corolla and it backfires out of intake manufold. I did confirm timing mark yet again and the seem to be as require on the tdc cylinder one power stoke . what...

OH BOY, YOU DINT BEND A VALVE'S????? CHECK THE COMPRESSION ON IT. OTHER THEN THAT YOUR TIMING IF OFF BY A BIT. SIMPLE AS THAT. OR RUN A TIMING LIGHT ON IT TO SEE IT TOO. MOST LIKELY ITS OFF TIME. DONT WORRY IVE BEEN DOING TIMING BELTS FOR 17 YEARS AND I STILL MISS THE PERFECT DOTS AT TIMES AND END UP REDOING IT AGAIN FOR THE PERFECT DOTS. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED THE DIAGRAPM OF THE TIMING MARKS. GOOD LUCK

Timing belt Broken

A quick visual of the cams and valves with the rocker cover removed should tell you the amount of damage, if you don't want to go that route, and just want to try the belt, Take out a couple spark plugs to release the comp, pull the front covers, turn over the engine slowly, clockwise, till the timing marks on the crank line up, just 2 small dots, do the same to the cams, slip on the belt, the belt tensioner should be real tight to push back, then let it go, If the belt was on, you would just put the pin back in and pull the pin when you are done, Your tensioner might need to be replaced, but wait and see what else you got to deal with first, ok, belt on, turn motor by hand, anything crunching? anything getting tight? If you have the rocker covers off you can see the valves in action. I would spin it around a couple dozen times by hand, checking the timing marks, make sure they line up each time, and if all sounds good, put it back, but if you hear the slightest crunch, knock, thud, you have major damage. and running the engine will only make it worse, you will have to pull the heads, get them fixed and check the tops of the pistons, make sure there isn't holes in them. One of the first things to give would be the cams, they shatter pretty easily. Hope this helps.
