Question about 1998 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

The convertible top will not work on my 1998 Ford Mustang. I have checked the two relays at the motor in the trunk, as well as, the two relays under the hood. I have checked the switch with a new one, still will not work. I can unplug the switch and ground-out the plug and the motor will work in both directions but will not work through a switch properly. What am I missing?

The problem here was with the E-Brake switch found at the back of the emergency brake handle. When applied the switch sends a signal to a light on the dash as well as a signal to the conv-top switch. When the E[Brake was appied I noticed the "BRAKE" light was not lite on the dash telling me there was no signal coming from that switch. What had to be done? I pulled the console out, found the E-Brake swith. The switch appeared to have a black ring around the contact surface point. I cleaned the contact point with a very fine grade emery cloth type sandpaper, reinstalled the swith at the correct mounting point behind the E-Brake handle, plugged the con-top switch up, turned the key to the "RUN" position and the top worked like brand new. It goes up and down from the switch like Ford engineered it to.

Problemed Solved.

First be sure that one of your hoses to the cylinders aren't broken or disconnected, then follow the hoses usually they are right behind the rear seat or under it and possibly in the trunk your owners manual should say more about it if you don't have one your Ford dealer will have a service manual or you can go to your local library and copy pages from the repair manuls they have!

Without testing the electrical circuits your guess is as good as anyones . Do you know what a wiring diagram is ? How to use a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? To relays - lower relay & raise relay . Do you know how to test where the relay plugs in . If you look on the bottom of the relay or on the side you will see four sets of numbers , 30 - 87 & 85 - 86 . Watch this video an test the circuits . Probably just the relay , but test to be sure .

My 1993 Ford Mustang convertible won't go up.But the motor is coming on.Also it will go down thou

There must be a hydraulic fluid leak somewhere. Check to see if there is oil filler cap on your hydraulic pump located in the trunk compartment. Fill if necessary with just enough fluid to raise the top. The reason it won't go up is cause it is lacking pressure from the low fluid

Top worked fine yesterday but today tried to let down only clicked

It is a hydraulic pump that applies pressure to the 2 hydraulic pistons to raise & lower the top. So, check for something obstructing movement first.

The convertible top:
  • is motor-driven.
  • requires parking brake engaged to complete circuit for operation.
  • is equipped with a back window glass (42006) . The back window glass is permanently attached to the folding top back window curtain (52500) and cannot be opened.
  • Damaged fluid reservoir.
  • Damaged folding top hydraulic cylinders .
  • Damaged folding top motor upper and lower hose .
  • Damaged convertible top regulator.
  • Parking brake not engaged.
  • Open power distribution box circuit breaker CONV TOP (30A), fuse junction panel Fuse 1 (15A).
  • Circuitry open/shorted.
  • Damaged convertible top switch.
  • Damaged raise/lower relay .
  • Damaged folding top hydraulic lift motor and plate kit .

  • Convertible Top Does Not Raise/Lower
  • Open circuit breaker or fuse.
  • Circuitry open/shorted.
  • Damaged folding top switch.
  • Damaged raise/lower relay .
  • Damaged folding top hydraulic lift motor and plate kit .

2006 Mustang convertible with only set of keys locked in trunk.

Convertibles are easy, just cut the top ,, just kidding. Call the dealer and get the key code, I would think the locksmith would have done that already?

Mustang 2001 convertible top goes up but not down.

Sounds like the switch is bad. Also check the relays. You might have one for up and one for down.
