what did you do to fix it

  • royerikson Aug 28, 2008

Engine light came on, car runs fine, starts fine, all fluid levels check out. Took it to an Auto Zone, their mini scope wouldn't register a read, and the odometer said no buS.
    Any clues?

As far as the first question, can you get a PCM with the same number, yes.

Can you discribe what happened prior to the "no bus" message?

No buS after complete engine shutdown. Has previously had difficulties with shutting down only to re-start when keyed.

After doing a lot of reading on bus errors in Chrysler models, I've found that Chrysler did a lot of changing/upgrading between the 1980s when the CCD (Chrysler Collision Detection) bus was introduced and 2005, when most models were switched to the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus system. In between those two, from 2001 through 2004 for most models, they used the PCI (Programmable Communication Interface) bus system.
With the older CCD bus system, apparently many NOBUS errors could be corrected by changing the crank position sensor, as it was one of the signals carried by the bus. Or it could be corrected by changing the PCM or instrument cluster.
For the PCI system, ALL controllers with microprocessors (PCM, TCM, BCM, instrument cluster, anti-lock brake controller, air bag controller, keyless entry, sound system, etc) are linked to the PCI bus. So a NOBUS error message in the odometer only says that there is a communication fault in the bus; it can't tell you which module/microprocessor is not working properly or if it's a wiring error. Changing out the PCM may correct the problem since the PCM is the 'dominant' module, but no guarantees.
Reading forums and other web sites regarding this issue, the prevailing advice is to use a DRB scanner capable of communicating with the different modules to see if they are all communicating properly. But it seems that the fault most often lies in a poor ground connection or damaged wiring or connectors.
If your local mechanics are stumped, find one (or go to a dealer) who can do troubleshooting of all modules with appropriate scanners. It may be a quick fix, but you'll have to invest in the expertise of someone who knows what to look for and how to diagnose it.

My 2002 put cruiser reads no bus in ?the odomator display even with ?the key off and out also dash lights flash off and on

The no bus message means one of the control modules isn't communicating on the data bus or isn't working ! I don't know how many modules yours has but ,if it has antilock brakes an I know it has air bags , an PCM - engine transmission computer , the instrument cluster has a control module an all these modules are on a serial data communication network , there share information ! The speedometer gets it's info from the VSS vehicle speed sensor through the PCM over the bus to the instrument cluster same with coolant temperature ! So I would have it taken to the dealer if you don't know about this stuff ! Need special tools to test this 2004 Chrysler Sebring No Bus message in cluster testing

Codes po340 2004 Sebring

DTC code is P0340 no cam signal at PCM. Chrysler always used to say replace the cam and crank sensors together..wouldn't pay our warranty time at dealer unless we replaced both.

Chrysler sebring code p0513

P0513 stands for invalid SKIM Key. Basically it means that the "computer chip" that is in your ignition key which has a special code is not recognized by your vehcile compter (PCM). In most cases that I have come across is that either your VIN is not entered or is the incorrect VIN programmed into the PCM. Have you recently changed the PCM ? You may try another ignition key but I doubt that would work unless you are using the wrong key for the vehicle. You will need special diagnostic computer programs in order to correct this problem. Most likely your PCM will need to be "Flashed" to the VIN. This really isn't a weekend/backyard/part time mechanic fix. Hope this helps you to understand what the code is and what it means. Guessing the vehicle won't start.....

2001 chrysler sebring has no bus under odometer i was told it is the pcm if that is the case can i get a another with the same number? The car will not crank at all i jump the starter with the key turned...

Well I will try here to make out what you are exactly asking here.

- "no bus under odometer" do you mean the obd2 port? if so that is under the dash and by hooking up a scanner you can see if the PCM is functioning.

- Can you get another PCM? Yes but they are costly. Also if you incorrectly jump started your vehicle you may have damaged your PCM.

- Just because a battery shows 12V doesn't mean its good. If it is not producing enough cranking amps it can cause the car not to turn over.

Its sounds like you probably fried the PCM or have some kind of wiring issue in the steering column though. Its one of those I would have to see it to properly diagnose things.
