Probably failed free axle air pump. This mounts below radiator on RH side of vehicle. Should be able to hear it buzz for a few seconds if you get down there and have someone else turn on the key and try to engage 4WD lever. No buzz-no work.
Our 2001 XL7 has gone through 2 of these in 150,000 mi. The unit is mounted low where it gets tire splash. Salt from road corrodes the wiring and it fails.
About 10 minutes to R and R.
Can get replacement through Southwest Suzuki on the Web for about $225.
Hope this helps.

If there are worn out or malfunctioning parts replace them.If there are loose connections of wires then reconnect it . But if the owner cant do it go to a car mechanic and the mechanic will do the job.
