I need to replace the fuel pump on my 2001 Saturn L200 with a 2.2 L Engine. What is the best procedure?

Fuel Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.9L Engine To prevent excessive fuel spillage, whenever the tank is removed from the vehicle it should be no more than 1?2 full. Removal of the fuel pump module assembly requires the removal of the fuel tank.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Fuel feed and return lines from the filter/pressure regulator
    • Fuel pump vapor line from the fuel tank vent pipe
    • Fuel pump module retaining ring with service tool SA9156E. A 1?2 inch breaker bar will loosen the lockring
NOTE: To prevent bending of the sending unit float arm, lift the pump module up slightly to disengage the orientation tabs in the tank. Rotate the module 90 degrees clockwise until the fuel lines are facing the 1 o'clock position.
    • Fuel pump module from the fuel tank until the bottom of the pump module is close to the fuel tank opening
    • Tilt the pump module approximately 45 degrees to the right hand side of the tank and lift the pump from the fuel tank
    • Fuel pump to tank seal and discard it
    To install:
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Fuel pump module into the fuel tank by orientating the float to face the right side and tilting the module approximately 45 degrees
    • Fuel pump into the tank and rotate the assembly 90 degrees counterclockwise to align the module tabs with the slots in the tank
NOTE: The fuel pump retaining ring cannot be properly installed if the flange locator tabs are not aligned with the slots in the fuel tank.
    • Retaining lockring with tool SA9156E
    • Vapor line to the fuel tank vent pipe
    • Fuel feed and return lines to the filter/pressure regulator
    • Fuel feed, return and EVAP canister purge line in the fuel tank retaining clip
    • Fuel tank
    • Negative battery cable
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
2.2L and 3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Fuel tank
    • Fuel lines from the fuel pump module cover
    • Fuel pump module retaining ring with a Sending Unit Wrench, J43827
    • Pull the retaining clip toward the float arm and lift up
    • Fuel pump straight up from the fuel tank
    • Fuel pump tank seal and discard the seal
    • Fuel feed line from the bottom of the fuel pump cover with Clamp Pliers J43914
    • Fuel pump electrical connector Fig. 1: Remove the fuel pump cover lockring-2.2L and 3.0L engines 9306zg57.gif
    To install:
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Fuel pump feed line to the cover
    • Fuel pump electrical connector
    • Fuel pump to the new seal
    • Fuel pump cover lockring with tool J-43827
    • Fuel lines and wiring harness
    • Fuel tank
    • Negative battery cable
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.

Not gitting fuel from the gas tank to the fuel pump on a 1984 s10 blaer 2 door

this is a mechanical fuel pump that works off cam lobe, check fuel line from pump all the way to tank, notice wet or rusted line, split rubber lines that connect metal lines to pump and top of tank. disconnect fuel line at pump (suction) side. put a rubber hose on the suction side and clamp, install other end in a clear container with gasoline in it. attemp to start vehicle if it pumps fuel and starts then your problem is the line from the tank to the pump, if it doesn't pump it is the diaphram in the pump. If you suspect the pump and remove it inspect what drives it as well at this time. I believe it is pump or the supply line

The relay or fuel pump is going bad. Probably a fuel pump.

Mechanical Fuel Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION The fuel pump is located on the passengers side of the engine towards the front of the car. Fig. 1: Fuel system component layout — carbureted models 86835007.gif
Fig. 2: Mechanical fuel pump assembly mounting — carbureted models 86835008.gif
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the fuel pump cover.
  2. Clamp the fuel lines closed with fuel line clamps or equivalent, to prevent fuel from running out. Wrap a rag around the fuel lines and disconnect them from the fuel pump. NOTE: When disconnecting the fuel lines, twist and slide them off to avoid damage.
  3. Remove the fuel pump retaining bolts and remove the pump from the engine. To Install:
  4. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and using a new gasket, install the fuel pump in position on the block.
  5. Tighten the fuel pump retaining bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6. Reconnect the fuel lines and make sure that they are tightly clamped. Do not over tighten the clamps or you will damage the hoses.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable and start the vehicle. Check for leaks at the fuel pump.

If the car is stalling it means that there is a problem in the fuel pump assembly where you have to check the fuel pump ,the fuel filter , the fuel lines.Prepare the tools or equipment to be used in checking or servicing the fuel pump assembly. In the fuel pump so that fuel pump will operate properly : locate the fuel pump, disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump, remove fuel pump from the engine,dis-assemble fuel pump, check the daiphram for defects, replace defective parts assemble and install fuel pump.
in the fuel filter:So that when fuel filter is removed ,no fuel will spill on the vehicle and no parts are lost.Locate the fuel filter ,disconnect lines at fuel filter, observe safety practices . if the filter is worn out or dirty rather clean it or replace it and install new fuel filter.
the fuel lines : So that fuel will flow freely and no abstraction within the fuel lines. Locate fuel lines, visual inspection on duel line for learage, disconnect lines at fuel pump and fuel tank, Use compress air to remove sediments on fuel lines re-install fuel lines to the unit. but if the fuel lines are worn out it should be replaced.
