Question about Buick Regal

2 Answers

I have a 95 buick regal 3.8L. I changed the valve cover gaskets and after I was done the car idles rough. I did a vacuum test on it and it indicates that its a worn valve guide. Is it possible that I got a some dirt in the cylinder head when i was changing that gasket? Would that cause problems like this?

When you say a vacuum test indicated a worn valve guide, was there a slight rapid vacuum gage needle fluctuation at idle?? a worn valve guide as a rule only causes oil consumption,( not a rough idle), and on only one cylinder, which would be very little oil burned, I have allot of time working on the GM 3.8L V6 I have never heard of this issue related to the valve cover gasket being changed, as a technician with 30+ years in dealers I flat don't think they are related, have you checked the power balance on the engine?? Run a power balance and a compression test? then you have the whole picture, after that the appropriate repair will most likely be to pull the last thing though, have you sprayed the intake with carb spray to verify no intake leaks?? Another thing how would dirt find it's way to the intake system from a VC gasket change? it would go to the crankcase oil pan.

Anything could have caused that, it is unfortunate! I have that engine on my Bonnieville, and it is a great one!

Please check any other possible cause first!

You should note that the 3800 engine uses integral valve guides. IE; they are a part of the cylinder head and cannot be replaced. They can be reamed oversize if they are found to be worn past the appropriate limits. Sometimes, the valve guide bore will be oversized as manufactured. This will be marked on the inboard side of the cylinder head on the surface just above the intake manifold.

This could be fixed by reaming and replacing the guide with oversized stems.

When I start My 1998 buick regal ls 3.8 it idles rough and stalls most of the time, the rpm's go up and down as soon as I let go of the key. If I step on gas for a few seconds it stays running. Motor

did you clean any carbon from the air intake and air passages around the idle control motor. carbon buildup around fuel injectors or intake manifold can cause this problem also.

1999 f 150 4.2L V6 idles very rough and sounds like a hissing sound in the engine compartment

Check for loose spark plugs. have a compression test done to check for valves and head gasket. Check for loose /missing/broken vacuum lines. Check brake booster for vacuum leaks.

Rough idle 95 astro van, I did a full tune up , plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and fuel filter and cleaned egr vavle.

I actually had to replace my EGR valve and the gasket. I clean the valve well and reused both. I don't think the gasket sealed well enough though. So I went ahead and got a new valve, gasket and changed them. It runs a lot smoother now.

1990 Buick Regal 3.1 has rough idle, hesitates and dies when accelerating.

A lot of new parts! Have a compression test done to gauge the engine's internal condition, and go from there. If compression is good on all 6 cylinders, scan for trouble codes. The compression test may find your problem, something like an exhaust valve burned or not seating properly.

P1299 code after replacing the plenum gasket. Rough and sometimes erratic idle.

This code indicates a large vacuum leak. You can sometimes find a leaky gasket by spraying ether on the gaskets while the engine idles. If the engine changes speed while the gasket is sprayed, you have found the leak.

I have a water/antifreeze leak below the thermostat of 1996 buick regal 3.8L and can't see what is leaking or why?

its sounds like a intake manifold gasket...these cars are know for this an they leak coolant at the corners of the gasket around the thermostat or it is a front engine cover leaking...u need to have a coolant pressure test done on this to make sure since these repairs can be expensive

92 Buick regal 3.1 starts up idles up then shuts off

Observe the idle if it is rough, if it is it may be problem with the vacuum lines. They could be loose or there could be a leak somewhere. You may also need to have the IAC valve for the idle inspected. A good cleaning with a cleaning spray for carb would be good in the intake. See if you can rev the engine. If there is a loss of power or could not go to higher revs inspect the fuel filter. It may need replacing.

You name it ive done it!!!! I have a 99 regal with the 3800 series 2 and it is running rough either at idle oe driving and every once in awhile it will just die but starts right back !!! any ideas?

I have a 1988 Buick Century and was having trouble diagnosing a similar issue. $70 and an idle air motor (really looks more like a solenoid-driven valve) solved 60% of the problem...still working on the lagging on the high end, but driving it every day. Good luck!

ENGINE IDLES ROUGH, BUT RUNS FINE WHILE DRIVING. My car is a 1995 Buick Regal Gran Sport with the 3800 series motor with 212000 miles. The rough idle tarted after driving through some muddy and wet roads

go the cheapest route. replace fuel filter and add SEAFOAM to tank of premiun fuel. replace filter before 500 miles. then add SEAFOAM to gas every 3000 miles to keep lines.engine, fuel pump, and emissions systems clean, ETHANOL problem number 3000

95 GMC Jimmy 4.3l W vin rough idle

My problem was solved when I repaired my 4 wd activation dash switch. The switch was contacting on 2WD & 4HI at the same time. The front differential activation is vacuum activated possibly creating a tug of war that didn't actually engage it but drained off vacuum from the engine? A theory at best but stumbbled across it because I knew the switch wasn't working properly I repaired it and low and behold rough idle disappeared and all is good for 3 weeks running.
