CHECK FOR LOOSE VACUUM HOSE AT INTAKE, CHECK IDLE SPEED SENSOR. THOSE ARE WHAT COULD AFFECT IDLE.

if it shuts off while driving down the road. and restarts after 10 minutes, its usually a bad crank sensor that does this. it messes up timing and shuts off fuel supply.

2001 jimmy sle. I just replaced the fuel pump. Fuel guage works. Pump does not. Checked fuel pump relay- its ok. Trucks turns over but won't start. Whats next?

Test for ground and power at your fuel pump connector. Also, the sending units sometimes come without the pump itself wired in. You have to actually splice in connections sometimes. If you get stuck, dropping the tank again and removing the sending unit to inspect could be your next step.

REplaced fuel pump still won,t start when its cold it starts right up when its hot the only way it starts when cold is relieve pressure from line 1997 chevey pu . 305 .

Check your fuel pump relay Alot of chevy systems back up the fuel pump power supply through the oil pressure sending unit . So even if the relay is NG the vehicle will still start and run because the oil pressure sending unit is feeding the pump . It also could be a combination of bolth a bad relay and the O P sending unit it needs to build up enough engine pressure to trip the switch inside the sender to send voltage to the fuel pump and it would do this much better if it was cold the oil is thicker

Is the fuel sending unit access area under the rear seat

Hello: NO, you have to remove the gas tank to access the fuel pump/sending unit-fuel level sensor.

Low fuel light comes on at idle. Yes, there is a 3/4 to full tank. Idles fine at stops and has excelleration.

Hi, A common problem with these trucks is the sending unit mounted on the fuel pump in the tank. The sending unit is a variable resister which tells the gauge how much fuel is in the tank. this resister is not made very well, my sending unit failed after 5 years. I waited till my fuel pump failed(2 years later) replaced the pump now my gauge works great.

When my 1996 Jimmy gets to a half a tank the gas gauge goes crazy and will go to empty then back to half. I acts like it is running out of gas. It also has a rough idle. What could be causing this...

The wire harness to the fuel pump sending unit may be going bad which is common to happen. The harness is around $15.00 and it runs from the frame to the top of the gas tank. The other thing to is the fuel pump sending unit may be going bad and the float in side that measures the amount of gas, has gone bad and the unit may need to be replaced. As for the rough idle, it cold be related to the fuel pump starting to go bad and the fuel pressure is just marginal to keeping the engine running. The fuel pressure during cold start should be 62-65 PSI and should drop about 5 PSI when the engine is running. The other thing to that would casue a rough idle, would be time for a tune up, "spark plugs, wires and distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter"

?87 F-150 5.0 stalled and won?t restart. Electric

Is the fuel pump inside the fuel tank? If, so, you could try disconnecting the wire harness at the tank, and hot-wiring the fuel pump directly to a 12 volt source, in the correct polarity of course! If the pump runs, your problem may be a fuel pump relay, or a wire problem or connector problem. If the pump does NOT run, post that info. There may be a way around the problem!

Vehicle keeps stalling. Replaced fuel filter and altenator. It'll run good but when you come to a stop it'll stall. Is this the fuel filter??

I have had the same problem. I changed fuel filter, added fuel injector cleaner, still runs rough as hell at a idle. Didnt think it could be the fuel pump, because ran ok at hiway speeds, it only stalled when giving less gas, not more. So in theory I figured couldn't be fuel pump. I was so wrong. At hiway speeds you have inertia, engine is running faster already etc. Its the fuel pump. 90% of the time in GM cars thats what it is when it behaves this way.
to change the fuel pump:

In the tank, the following is a run down of how to replace it..

This is actualy a pretty involved repair. You have to have the car jacked up on all 4 corners, or up on a car lift. Disconnected battery, and it is recomended you have as much gas as posible drained from the tank. Then underneath the car you will find the tank with 2 staps holding it in place. Those staps should be taken off or at least out of the way while the tank is being supported. There are vacume lines, the fuel fill and vent lines, and the wiring harness that all have to be unhooked. Once you are sure that all lines are disconnected, drop the tank and pull to the side. Wash the top of the tank off, there will be dirt and rocks on top of it, and you need to get all of these out of the way. You will see where the wiring harness goes into the fuel sending unit. Around that peice is a slide ring that has to be gently hammered counter clockwise. Once it is free from its retaining clips, the fuel sending unit will have to be wiggled out very carefully. Once out, you will see the fuel pump mounted in line on the fuel sending unit. You will have to work out how its mounted in line, and get it off and unplugged. Reinstall the new fuel pump and reverse the procedure.
Parts needed:
Fuel Strainer
Fuel pump
Lock ring O-ring
Posibly the fuel sending unit if you were having problems with your gas gauge.

Hope this helps!
