Check to see if water in oil. My oil light came on, resulting in very loud knocking. Suggest draining oil and remove Drain pan. Mine was full of milky oil and dirt. (Serviced 1500km earlier!). Ended up being blown head gasket. Very expensive repair, still considering if worth it...

It sounds like the timing chain self adjuster is not operating properly.
This unit is internal and is oil fed by engine oil pump.
Sometimes it can be remedied by replacing engine oil and filter, try 15x40 oil (for warm weather) or 5w30 (Cold climates)
