Question about 1994 Mazda 626

My car, 1994 Mazda 626 4cyl,would not pass emission testing. The shop said I had no compression in one cylinder. I was told I needed a valve job. As a part of that, I went ahead and had a new head gasket set. The shop has since replaced all the machined parts and the car won't start. I don't know much about car repair, but my theory is that it may be related to the timing belt and all the shop did was remove the parts that I mentioned above, sent the parts to the machine shop, got the parts back and just reinstalled. My question is: Is the timing belt a consideration in the above repairs? If yes, could they have not known that the timing belt has to be taken into consideration when you perform this kind of work?

    I asked a specific question about whether or not the timing belt needed to be taken into consideration when this kind of repair takes place.
    I am very worried that they have screwed up and do not know where to turn.

"Is the timing belt a consideration in the above repairs? Yes, the timing belt must be installed correctly or the engine will not start. The timing belt was removed and reinstalled when this repair was performed and any mechanic would know this. I would suspect it was not installed correctly and that is why your car will not start. If it will not start then it must still be at the shop that did the repair. The timing belt must be replaced every 60,000 miles so you more than likely needed a new one anyway. Let the shop you are paying to repair the vehicle sort out why it will not start.

I dont say that you have one bad work, but I suggest check this procedure, according with the repair manual... 1.5L, 1.2L DOHC (except K2) and 2.0L Engines
(see Figures 2 through 14 / click over images for zoom)

  1. As necessary, unbolt the power steering hose securing brackets from the valve cover. It may be necessary to remove the power steering pump in order to allow the hose enough range of motion to clear the valve cover.

  1. Disconnect the PCV hose from the cover.
  2. Loosen the cover bolts evenly over three steps.
  3. Remove the valve cover bolts, keeping them in order. Some bolts are longer than others and should be returned to their original locations. Remove the cover from the engine.

    1. Install the cover on the cylinder head with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts in the order shown in fig33 to 52-63 inch lbs. (6-2 Nm).
    2. Install the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Connect the vent hose and the PCV hose to the cover.
    3. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.

    Keep in mind that its possible that you need make some valve adjust; these engines use solid cam followers with a removable adjustment shim.
    The valve lash clearance is measured with the original shim installed
    and checked against the specification. If adjustment is necessary, the
    original shim is removed, and a thicker or thinner shim is installed to
    obtain the proper clearance. Special tools are required in order to
    adjust the shim without removing the camshaft.


    With the engine cold, standard valve clearance is 0.010-0.012 in. (0.25-0.31mm) on intake and exhaust sides.





    1. Remove the cylinder head cover.


    2. Measure the valve clearance by turning the crankshaft clockwise until the No. 1 piston is at TDC.







    1. Measure the valve clearance at
      A
      . If the clearance exceeds specifications, replace the adjustment shim.








    1. Turn the crankshaft clockwise 360 degrees until the No. 4 piston is at TDC. Measure the valve clearance at
      B
      . If the clearance exceeds specifications, replace the adjustment shim.



    2. Repeat this procedure for all the camshafts.


    3. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the cam on the camshaft requiring the adjustment is positioned straight up.






    1. Remove the camshaft cap bolts as follows:



    2. For exhaust side No. 1, 2, and 3 cylinder adjustment shim removal use
      A.




    3. For intake side No. 1, 2, and 3 cylinder adjustment shim removal use

    6. Install special tools 49-T012-002 and 003, using the camshaft cap bolt holes. Torque the bolts to 100-125 inch lbs. (11-14 Nm).


    7. Align the mark on the 49-T012-002 (shaft) with the mark on the
      49-T012-003 (clamp). Tighten special tool 49-T012-004 (bolt) to secure
      the shaft.



    8. Position special tool 49-T012-001A toward the center of the
      cylinder head, and mount it on the shaft where the adjustment shim needs
      replacement.



    9. Position the notch of the tappet to allow a small pry tool to be inserted.




    1. Set the special tool on the tappet by its notch. Tighten the mounting bolt
      B
      securing it on the shaft.




    2. Tighten bolt
      C
      , and press down the tappet.



    3. Using a small pry tool, pry the adjustment shim upwards through the notch on the tappet. Remove the shim with a magnet.



    4. Select and install the proper adjustment shim. Loosen bolt
      C
      to allow the tappet to move up, and loosen bolt
      B
      to remove special tool 49-T012-001A.



    5. Remove special tools 49-T012-002, 003 and 004, and tighten the camshaft cap bolts to 100-125 inch lbs. (11-14 Nm).


    6. Repeat the procedure for all necessary adjustment shims. Check the valve clearance.


    Additionaly, must to checl the right firinr order for 1994 Mazda 626 2.0 liter DOHC L4

Ok, I've told this many, maaaaany times friend, but here's the jist of it all. Have a test unit plugged into your OBI and get the codes. These codes will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. Test all unplugged injectors with an ohm-meter and that will tell you if it's a bad injector. I'f one reads a ot lower than the others, replace that injector. It's causing a dead cylinder. If all read the same, do a compression test with all plugs out. The one with very low compression will tell you that a valve, most likely the exhaust valve, is burnt and needs attention. I know just what it feels like going down the road with the hole vehicle shaking so badly it pist you off that it is doing this. These tests are the only way of finding it.

My 1994 Honda Accord Lx running richemission: failed emission test.


When the mechanical timing "slipped" the valve timing was affected. Valves can be bent if they strike a piston. Have a compression test performed on each cylinder. If the compression is low on any cylinder, likely the cause is a bent valve caused by the mis-timed engine. The cylinder head will have to be removed and the bent valves and valve guides replaced as part of a "valve job."

There is always a better alternative than the dealership as far as costs. They want to put a new motor in a 2003 model? That is ridiculous to me- cost-prohibitive. Find a reputable independent shop. Look for references and customer satisfaction. A used, low mileage replacement engine is a better alternative, probably less than half the cost of a new engine.
There may be an even better alternative, where you refurbish the top end of the engine-the cylinder head and valve train. This is dependent on that a wet-dry compression test supports rebuilding the top end. What I mean by this is a compression test of the cylinders reveals low compression in one or more cylinders, okay. Next, they would squirt some oil (about a tablespoon) in the low cylinders and check compression again. If compression doesn't change, it points to the valves and valve train (the valve guides which wear and could let oil into the cylinder). But if compression is higher in the wet test, then the piston rings are worn and losing compression, and oil gets past them-this would indicate the engine needs a complete rebuild or a replacement is called for. The reason for the wet test is that the oil will temporarily seal around the piston rings and improve compression if the rings are the problem.
If the test shows the valves are the problem (and it is very possible on an engine with only 120K-your bottom end could be fine), then a top end rebuild of the engine is a much cheaper route than any other choices. You may not know this, but often a little oil burning in the cylinders at start-up is nothing more than the valve stem rubber seals are deteriorated-a real cheap fix. The dealership probably won't tell you this. However, with the loss of power, well, that points to something more severe than valve stem seals. So I would recommend the wet compression test, just to check if it is the top end or the bottom end. If it's the top end, you could have the cylinder head reconditioned and motor along for a few more years, trouble free.
Similar to a compression test, a "leak down" test of the cylinders is actually a more accurate method of finding where compression is lost, and it's only a one step test. They hold compressed air in the cylinder and analyze where it escapes to pinpoint compression loss. Loss of compression translates into loss of power. Have either test done before you decide. Find a good mechanic and trust his advice. (Stay far away from dealers. Greed is their motivating factor.)

nothing . have a compression test done on the engine to determine the condition. have n exhaust test done to get the exhaust emissions reading to determine where the faults lay . Check the condition of the charcoal canister.

Absolutely!. The dealer shafted you, if he told you nothing was wrong. 80 psi leakage out of exhaust (valve,;;;where else?) is a dead give-away: You need a good old fashioned VALVE JOB. Your exhaust valve, see, is not seating properly, not sealing as it should. It leaks, bigtime in your case, so compression is low, unburned gas escapes out the exhaust (You smelled it!), no power from that cylinder so it idles like ****, and will try to die, and of course, mileage suffers. Sound familiar, Robin?
Now of course the dealer knew what it was. Apparently he didn't want this time-consuming job. All he wanted was his in the door and out money. From the shop mechanics point of view, a cylinder head job is a relatively low paying and time consuming job. But there's no excuse for somebody not telling you that you need a valve job. Take it somewhere else. It's gonna be expensive, no getting around it, cause the head has to come off, but at least it's a whole lot less than an engine overhaul. And just give those figures to your new mechanic-the diagnostics are all done. Good luck.

When going uphill its weak. already chang sparkplug to new but still the same.when stepping on the gas pedel its not giving more power.


I suspect you have some bad valves, probably exhaust valves. Do a compression test on each cylinder and make the sure the compression of each cylinders is a similar value. You will need to
look up what the compression value should be in a Chiltons or other manual for your car.

This happened to me on my 1992 Tercel. When going up a hill I would punch the gas to the floor
and not speed up until I geared down. I took the cylinder head off and 2 exhaust valves looked really bad. I went to a cylinder head shop and the guy that works there immediately told me I need a valve job and pointed out the beat up looking valves I saw. They machined the valve seats and replaced the bad valves. Rockers need to be adjusted with the engine warm, so youll need to adjust the rocker clearance after you re-install the head and run the engine.

If the compression is much lower in one or more cylinder those are the ones with a problem.

You can get a loaner compression tester from autozone. If you have never checked compression, I will tell you how if you need.

Rough idle slow to take off but smoothes out at 25mph seems way underpowered up hills


Sounds like you have either a fuel pressure concern or a restriction in the exhaust system. I would check (replace) the fuel filter first. Also check to see that you have the correct fuel pressure @ the engine.The fuel pressure at the fuel rail should be 38-44 PSI. If that does not correct concern. See if you can disconnect the exhaust system in front of the cat. converter and test drive. It will be loud be you should be able to see if that is the source of your problem.

My 97 s-10 is using oil pretty bad, but when i took it to the shop he put it up on the rack and didn't see any thing leaking from bottom, a little oil is seeping from the valve cover but can it loose this...


Do a dry compression test,then wet compression test,then cylinder leak down test.
Look at the exhaust emission gas readings also

You have worn cylinders/rings,valve stem seals,etc. Oil has to go somewhere

How do you fix a fuel evap in a 1994 Mazda B2300 truck. It is not passing smog.


sorry, to my knowledge there is no fix...there IS however a fuel additive available that will allow you to pass the Smog test...Google "pass Smog emissions test..."

TRY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY CABLE SO THE PCM (COMPUTER) RESETS TO ORIGINAL DEFAULT VALUES. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU. GOOD LUCK
