1997 honda prelude h22a4 timing belt

R&r head less than 1000 miles ago everything worked great untill engine died at idle, lots of noise, removed valve cover reveals intake cam has slipped quarter turn and the belt seems loose, it is a new belt. could the tensioner have failed and how out of time can acam be before interfering with piston?

I do not think the original problem even matters at this point since the engine is probably broke with valves running into pistons.. when you fix it replace every thing that is broken.. and .. just getting in there and replacing the belt can alert you to any additional coming problems like the bearing going bad in the tensioner.. always check or replace the tensioner if there is any doubt as to its condition.. good luck.

Check if it's the fan, take off the belt and run it long enough to see if the noise disappears.

Do i need to change the timing belt on my 1998 honda prelude

Eventually yes. Wether it is needed now or not depends on what the vehicle is doing. It would be a good idea to replace it before it breaks as it will be much easier and less expensive in the long run. If you wait till it breaks you will end up having to have the heads repaired on top of everything else.

The only way to For sure fix this is to have a Mechanic run a Diagnostic Check on the Entire car to locate the Problem. Fixing small things here and there will not get you anywhere with this Honda.

Engine dies

this sounds like a fuel pump issue. It could be the pump, or it could be the Master Relay.
