Question about 1994 Ford Taurus

Car wont start

Put a new coil pack and cap and rotor button had some spark to distributor before the new coil and after new coil but after installing new cap and rotor button now dont have spark from coil to cap

Do you have spark out of the coil into the cap? if so i would suggest removing the cap and testing for continuity between the center plug (coil input) and the spring loaded button on the inside also check the rotor, if you have no spark from coil at all be sure you have it wired correctly and be sure the coil wire did not get pulled apart in the ends please rate -jeff

Pu t in new coil and distrubtor cap and rotor put in new electronic module not firing wont start


No spark at the spark plug? It may be the pick-up coil inside the distributor. This is the sensor that tells the computer the engine's crank position.
If the ignition switch is good, you should have power at the coil's + terminal when key is on. You might check for that.

I have a 1993 chev pick-up v6 4.3, i just installed new spark plugs,new plug wires, distributor cap and rotor button.All plug wires are back in the right position,and i used the firing order 1-6-5-4-3-2...


This diagram is for 1998-1995 Chevy 6 cylinder 4.3L engines.
Your got the firing order exactly correct, at 1-6-5-4-3-2, but here's the thing to double-check:
The distributor rotation is clockwise (note badly rendered arrow in picture).

Since you probably got everything right, then you're left with really unusual/rare causes of
failure of the ignition system:
(a) rotor button misaligned/failing to make contact?
(b) rotor button not pressed onto distributor shaft far enough therefore failing to provide correct
proximity to distributor cap contacts when coil fires
(c) coil wire or contact loose/disconnected - press coil wire firmly down into distributor cap.
(d) distributor shaft of other damage caused during installation of rotor.
(e) spark plug wires defective from factory
(f) spark plugs defective from factory
(g) battery low - may need a charge to start
(h) ICM (ignition control module) failure - hook up your HEI (high energy ignition) tester, and
watch the quality of the spark on each cylinder.
(i) fuel problem? If spark is being properly delivered, its gotta be a fuel problem...
(j) distributor cap not screwed down flush to top of distributor? maybe just on one side?

Inspect the inside of the distributor cap - if there are lots of little metal bits all over the inside
of the distributor cap, then you know you have a misalignment of some type in there, and the
rotor and cap are destroying each other. normal operation will throw a quota of spark-ed off
metal bits inside the distributor cap, but since your cap is brand new, your attempts to start
the engine should have rotated the distributor so few times, you should see no metal debris.

Inspect the distributor cap contacts to see if any spark marks are more of less in the middle
of the cap's proper "contact zone". If not, you've diagnosed an internal misalignment, which
you know how to correct.

Had sparks from coil, bought new coil same problem, bought new distributor, now car will not even start


By distributor, is that the cap or the whole piece of aluminum- housing with stator assembly/ control module/shaft/rotor/cap, the whole sha-bang.
If it was the "whole" distributor & If it ran before you put the distributor in & you only had sparks then the distributor was installed wrong.
Check for spark at the end of the plug wires. If you have spark then its more likely the distributor is in wrong &/or the firing order is off.

83 chevy malibu with a 305 engine wont start after a brand new distributor, rotor cap, and ingniton coil have been installed, whats the problem?


recheck everything again. check for spark. if no spark, then your distributor is not getting power(12v). if you have spark, then check for fuel pressure. spray starting fluid in the carburator and see if it starts. if it does then your not getting fuel. if you have both then take out the distributor, put your #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke and reinstall your distributor and try again, your timing may be off. Would crank but would not start in extremely cold weather. Now it won't start at all but fires on and off.


Do a tune-up, Plugs, rotor button and distributor cap. Not sure if your model has a cap or coil pack. When you say fires off and on do you mean it starts off and on or you get ignition spark off and on. If you have a cap, the rotor button can get worn down and not make good contact with the contacts inside the cap. When engine rotates the rotor button rotates inside the cap which produces spark through your plugs wires. If you have a coil pack, it could be going bad. If coil packs get moisture within it and diffuses the spark from going into the plug wires. Moisture and wetness causes a lot of problems with the ignition system, so it's best to apply Di-Electric Grease to the coil pack, wire boots on both ends. The grease stops moisture from getting into the components and sparks from jumping to the moisture.

Replced the cap & dist coil pac has fire no spark to spark plug


install the new rotor, if that isn't it check the crankshaft position sensor.

Distributor cap and rotor location on chevy silverado


Most chevy 5.3 do not use a cap and rotor. Most have single coil per spark plug and wire. Trace spark plug wires to coil usually above the valve cover.
