Question about 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup

Open Question

I have a 1980 rabbit diesel 1.5L truck, there seems to be no glow plugs. i turn the key and press a button on the left of the wheel and it starts up. sometimes it doesn't want to start and i hear the starter grinding, i used ether starting fluid and it gets it started, it idles kinda high then settles down. I let the truck idle for a few minutes, then i take it for a drive..i turn the fan on so it doesn't overheat...i notice airbubbles in the fuel line, i changed the oil, fuel, and air filter...it was all original..the truck has 55k miles on it. i'm the second owner..when i drive the truck it stalls and i don't know if i have to change the priming pump or something else, any help??

it starts from cold because the auto choke is on ,allowing a richer mixture ,try removing the sender unit in the tank and seeing if the connection from the pump to the outlet connection is ok or leaking causing a loss of fuel pressure

SOURCE: 1980 VW Rabbit semi-warm starting problem

while engine running and warm, try spraying carb cleaner onto back engine at where injectors go in. if idle go up, then replace inj. seats.

takes a $12 tool from Snap-on to pull inj.'s (which you can make very easily if you're of the mind from scrap angle iron) and a 12mm hex for the seats. be careful as they will be VERY brittle!

SOURCE: my vw t4 2.5tdi year 2000 van is a knightmare to start

look at the spark plugs an see if they look like the have chocolate milk on them. You may have a head gasket going out. White smoke is usually burning coolant. Also you can look at the uderside of the oil cap. a little chocolate milk look is ok, that's pretty normal for a cold climate a lot is not a good sign.

SOURCE: Will not start without spraying starter fluid for a second.

I would start by changing the fuel filter. The next area would be the O-rings if so equipped. If it starts better after a short use then you are getting air in the fuel lines overnight. Diesels are tempermental. The cranking speed of the starter is important and easily checked externally. If you have a mechanical fuel pump you are relying on cranking speed to prime the fuel system. The timer or timing wiring could prevent the glowplugs from heating up. Diesels rely on glowplugs to start, then compression to run. Its a lot to look at but I suggested the cheapest fixes first.

I have a Hyundai accent 1.5 diesel 2002. Turns over but will not start, changed glow plugs and diesel is coming through the injectors

I believe your problem is with your crankshaft sensor. You may not have had to change glow plugs. Your problem seems to be with spark. If you change this part ,the crankshaft sensor, you should be OK. This sensor is located at the left front of your engine. Please let me know how you make out. GOOD LUCK.

I have an 1993 Ford F250 turbo diesel truck that won't start. I've been told, that the glow plugs are not warming up. Where are the glow plugs and is there anything I can do to warm them up or fix? Do they...

Are you waiting after turning ignition key on before actually moving key to start position? My diesel I turn key to 1st position;bells and lights;if engine is cold an amber light that looks like a lamp filiment comes on...wait until that light goes out before engaging the starter.

Car wont start when engine is cool

sounds like a glow plug problem,if it starts o.k. when warm, but not when cold, does it smoke a lot when trying to start it cold,if so i would say your glow plugs are either burned out or theres no power to them when you turn on the key,do you see the glow plug light on the dash,it may light, but that doesn,t mean the glow plugs are getting power

GLOW HAS TO BE WORKING.BECAUSE ENGINE STARTED.GLOW PLUGS ARE USED ON COLD START UPS.GLOW PLUGS PREHEAT THE AIR IN COMBUSTION CHAMBER SO DIESEL FUEL WILL START TO BURN ON START UP.WHEN YOU TURN ON IGNITION SWITCH THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT WILL TURN ON FOR MINUTE UNTIL PREHEAT DONE.GLOW PLUGS WILL STAY ON UNTIL THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GET OPERATING TEMPERATURE.THEN THEY TURN OFF.

I have a 1998 1.8 diesel van, once its running its ok, but getting it started can be difficult (esp in cold/damp) Have you got any tips for starting, does this model have a heater plug, if so what symbol...

Sounds like the glow plugs are frazzled. There is one electrical wire going to a plug, then each plug is connected in sequence. The glow plugs are heating devices used to get the fuel up to temperature before ignition.

They are fiddly to replace, but are relatively inexpensive and the most common source of issues with cold-starting diesel engines (first thing to fail).

Some cars had a 'pre-heat' available with glow plugs, where you simply turn the key part-way to 'on' and you would see a glow plug light come on (looks a bit like a picture of a spring). If you see this light on your van, you can turn the key to turn on the glow plugs and they will pre-heat your engine slightly and make starting easier

It sounds more like the glow plugs, the older models had trouble out of the module, but the 6.0 is pretty safe from all those problems. And don't forget to use the correct fuel additive for diesel engines, it helps .
