1998 jeep cherokee parking brake lever

Wife broke my parking brake handle and I cant figure out how to get the old one of the jeep so I can replace it with one I got from the junkyard.

My handbrake slips down often when I pull up on it. It seemed like the notches on the handbrake were worn. So I tried taking off the console but could not figure out how to take off the shift knob. I yanked out the plastic air duct and could see the teeths of the handbrake and tried filing the notches to make it sharper but the metal was too hard or the my file was too old and soft. So I gave up... could you give any more advice?

You have to remove the center console to get to the parking brake assembly. So there might be some trim panel or cup holders to pry off to get to the console mounting screws.Good Luck!!!!!

1994 Jeep GC rear drum brakes grab on damp days and low speeds. All hardware has been replaced including new shoes and drums.

The Caliper Adjustment Lever is what adjusts the caliper - ensuring the brakes pads are in proper placement to the rotor for effective braking. The lever must be cycled in order to keep the calipers adjusted properly. The only way the lever is cycled, is by the usage of the e-brake.

Remove the cable from the Caliper Lever. Be careful when handling and removing the spring.

Initial testing: After you have removed the ebrake cable - kneel in front of the rotor and give it a gentle shake (as if you were removing it). Do you notice any PLAY between the pads & rotor?? Make note of this.

For the TSM kit caliper adjustment instructions - visit here: Troubleshooting.htm#2 and click on "Adjust Caliper Parking Brake".

Good luck.

My gear shift is stuck on my 94 jeep cherokee, car starts fine but can take it out of park. what to do?

Check the brake switch on the pedal, if that does not work try to take apart the shifting lever there should be a motor that locks the steering lever try to disable it. have a good day !!

very simple the cable is attached to hood. any body with a little common should be able to do it but get a replacement first, that will help you understand what has to be done.

Wont shift into park the whole way and not able to remove key because of this

My 1998 does this. It may be the cable from the Transmission Selector to the Steering Column. I have not yet "cured" this, but the work-around is:

When the key can't be removed, with engine still OFF, set Parking Brake, then pull Gear Selector Lever from PARK all the way back, then return it to PARK.

Your key should now come out slicker than deer guts.

Pretty Mickey Mouse, I know, but in this economy, I don't have $200 for the Jeep Stealer to adjust the cable.

Button to e brake popped off, brake still works but won't stay up unless you hold it up, how can i fix this?

Replace the brake lever. it will be easier than trying to get the button back in and will probably not stay in if attempted anyway. Go to a local salvage yard and find a replacement brake lever

Parkling Brake Console Light Stays On

Parking Brake Console Light Stays On The light is on because the brake fluid is low. The sensor in the brake fluid reservoir is signaling low fluid. This may be because leaking or the brake pads/shoes are worn down, so check to see if they needs replacement. In the mean time you can add brake fluid.

The Parking brake switch is activated by the brake handle. If you use a flashlight you may be able to see it next to the handle.
