when you turn on your ignition to the point before engaging the starter all your warning lights should light up. The Engine Check Light is very obvious, except they throw convention to the wind and show it as 'Service Engine Soon' lamp 'Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)'.
Page 63 - Section 2-7 Instruments and controls
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) If this indicator lamp comes on steady or blinks while the engine is running, it may indicate a potential emission control malfunction. The malfunction indicator lamp may also come on steady if the fuel filler cap is loose or missing, or if the vehicle runs out of fuel. Check to make sure the fuel filler cap is installed and closed tightly, and that the vehicle has at least three gallons of fuel in the fuel tank. After a few driving trips, the lamp should turn off if no other potential emission control system malfunction exists.
the light is telling you that there is a problem in the engine management or transmission management systems
The smart ting to do is to have the fault codes read and the problem item repaired/replaced before it becomes a costly replacement
The check engine light should not come on at all. If it does than you need to put it on a code checker, to find out the reason for the check engine light coming on. The light is known as the malfunction indicator light (MIL). When it comes on it indicates a malfunction in the system.
you will have to check and see If the bulb is burnt out as you say there are no codes in the system therefore what they are checking for is a bulb check for the light to come on when the key is turned on.
I young so dont rely completly on me but it sounds like your vehicles computer is having a malfunction you ca take it to any auto zone and the willl plug up to your car and find out the problem as for taking to a mechanic there just gonna try to find the most expensive part they can to fix ..
Not true that GM dealer is the only one that can fix it . There are other independent repair shops that can, Transmission repair shops like AAMCO . You could too if you had access to a scan tool that can read DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes for the 4X4 system . There is a 4X4 control module that can store DTC'S when problems happen . When a warning like check 4 Wheel Drive light's up ,it's not meant for you to do anything except take it to the dealer ,well ,that's what the dealer would like .
Would need to know which 4X4 transfer case your's has ? Two speed manual , two speed selectable , two speed automatic ?
Their are a few different one's

Without having this info you could go round an round an never find the problem .
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp or MIL (Also called the check engine light or service engine soon light) comes on when the on board computer detects an issue with the operation of the engine or transmission.
The best thing to do is to take the vehicle to an auto parts store like Autozone and have them hook up their scan tool to the vehicle and read the code. They can read it, tell you what it is and also tell you what the code means.
If it is pointing to a faulty component or sensor and you replace or repair the component the the light will go off on its own after the computer sees that the malfunction is no longer present.
You can have the code cleared, but if whatever caused the light to come on in the first place is not addressed then it will just come back on eventually.
