You should be able to replace just the pulley assembly on the compressor by itself...your bearings are worn out and it will eventually lock up which is what it is trying to do now.. replacing the pulley assembly is not fun but it is so much cheaper than a new compressor and having to open up the refrigeration system

I replaced the idler pulley and serpentine belt on my Pontiac G5 and now it makes a horrible noise for about a minute and the idles and stops making the noise. What's wrong ?

Take the belt off and turn all of your pullies by hand an make sure none of them are catching or siezed. Also run the car and watch your ac compressor, when it kicks in make sure it is turning

I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette and the belt that goes around the motor keeps messing up. The inner part of the belt starts coming apart. We have replaced the pulley and are on the 4th belt now. The...

Can be a sign of a mis-aligned pulley. If a pulley is not perfectly flush with other pulleys, or skewed ( cocked a bit) it will tear up your belts. This is usually caused by worn out bolt holes retaining the component or its bracket, or a worn out component causing the pulley to wobble. With the belt off, Visually check pully alignment and skew with a straight edge. Using your hands, try to make eack pulley wobble by pulling back and forth on it to feel for play in the pulley bearing. No play is acceptable for and component pulley other than very slight play in tensioner pully. Ive seen A/C compressor and alternator pulley do that type of belt damage. Mike

Have a 1998 concorde and the AC belt keeps blowing. it seems to work but can't keep a belt on it. could pulleys be misaligned?

While the pulley could be misaligned, that only happens when something has changed, such as a new compressor installed.

The most common reason belts break is that there is an idler roller with a bad bearing, that causes the belt to get hot and burn up.

Anything on the same belt, that is not turning properly, could be the cause.
It could be the alternator, power steering, or even the AC compressor itself.

Take the belt off and turn whatever is attached to this belt, by hand. You should be able to tell where the drag is coming from.

But also if the belt is not being tightened enough, that will cause premature failure.

1992 Pickup: loud squelling sound under hood when started...

Sounds like a loose belt.

There are a few things that can cause a belt to slip like that.

The belt could be not tightened all the way. If it uses a sepentine belt with a tensioner, the tensioner could be bad. If it is not a serpentine belt, then you will have multiple belts and the one that is making the noise can be loose. Use something to pry it tight and tighten down the bolts holding the component th belt goes to.

It can also be a bad pulley. Pulleys have bearings inside of them, at times the bearings will go out and make the pulley hard to turn. You can usually find this easily by taking the belt off and turning the pulley with your hand. If it is hard to turn or makes a grinding noise when is bad and needs to be replaced.

Old belts can also cause this along with a belt that is wet. There is a spray on Belt Dressing that helps get rid of noisy belts, but I consider that a bandaid to a bigger problem.

2000 mazda protage belt keeps on shredding

With the belt off, inspect all of the pulleys and rotate them, noticing if any wobble or are cracked/bent. Any misalignment will tear and throw a belt. You can stand at the front1 of the car and eyeball a pulley to see if one across or below it, is out of line.

1995 Calillac Sedan Seville's A/C Compressor

It is possible. What you have to do is gat a belt for a vehicle that has the same engine as your car but with out A/C. It will have to be a Chevy or some other GM brand other than Cadillac. You cannot get a Caddy without A/C. I would go to a junk yard and look under the hood of a few cars. Some times even though the engines are the same the acessories may be in different places. When you find something with the same engine and acessories in the same place and no A/C just get a new belt for that car and put it on yours. You may have to remove your A/C compressor to make this work. Good Luck.

Can't get A/C belt around pulleys on my 01 Chevy Tracker 2.5 V6

The belt typically won't squeal when too tight, it will just put more wear and tear on the components. I would recommend removing the belt, and cleaning the pulley with brake parts cleaner and a tooth brush. There is probably some sort of residue on the pulley, which is allowing the belt to slip when the a/c clutch engages. If this doesn't help, make sure all of your pulleys are aligned. Use a long straight edge to check their alignment with each other. If they aren't close to perfectly straight, it will cause the belt to ride funny and squeal when the a/c clutch engages.

Noisy A/C Belt. How to adjust tension?

The tension is automatically applied by the tensioner pulley. If it is noisy either the belt is bad or a bearing is failing in the idler or AC compressor pulley.
