Most likely there's a problem with the connection to the fuel tank sending unit, the device that measures the amount of fuel in the tank. I have no idea if you can inspect the sending unit without dropping the fuel tank. If there is a way to inspect it, there would be an access panel in the trunk, most likely, since the gas tank is, I think, under the trunk. If not you'll have to drop the tank and check the wiring to see if the sending unit is installed and the wiring is sound. You'll need to verify that the sending unit is working by measuring ohms across it.

97 mercury mountaineer. won't start

hi,

watch your oil pressure when cranking, you have to have some oil pressure to get the fuel system to start. you may have to find the hot wire at the relay and energize it to see if it is indeed the fuel pump going out. if its been sitting and its a 97 the fuel pump just might have went, you can also try hitting the gas tank from the outside in the middle to see if that works too. have a water hose or fire extinguisher around when your working on fuel system and leave one of your battery cable a little loose..

Car dies on freeway.Never overheated!!! What could it be.I'm guessing the fuel pump

Hopefully you don"t need gas first in the tank. While driving did your motor seem to ruff suddenly and as you went slower to a stop did you pull over and turn car off? When you turned it on again did it start up really ruff without giving gas.Can be that you need a fuel injector replaced you can not clean it because it also works electronic.Toyota runs better on higher octane period.

No check engine light on until it stalls out. While driving around town and approaching stop sign/light, sometimes car will stall out. I also notice that my fuel gauge dips down about 1/4 tank and then...

You didn't say how much fuel is in the tank when this happens. Some of these old GM cars will starve for fuel if the tank is near empty and you are braking or stopping with the car facing downhill. It could be rust or scale in the fuel tank clogging the screen around the fuel pump inlet. Sometimes, putting cleaner in the tank of an older car will only cause more debris to loosen up from the inside of the tank and make the problem worse. If the problem gets worse, I would guess tht a new fuel pump/sloat assembly is in order. You may have to have the tank removed and cleaned or replacedd with a new one to prevent the problem from reocurring.

Lack of power in gas pedal

Check fuel pressure and see if its around 30-35 psi while under load if not replace fuel pump, also the gas thats in the tank may be no good if it has sat for so long..

Diesal gas in the tank

You must drain all the diesel fuel out of the tank and purge the fuel lines as well or it will not start.

1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme won't start

ok first shoot one little shot of gasoline in the throttle body or in the air cleaner to see if it will start up . If so it is a fuel problem .. Than I want you to try and turn on the Key and go to the rear of the car and crawl under the car and hit the gas tank as hard as you can with your fist.. this only sometimes works it might wake up the electric fuel pump and then try to see if it is picking up by starting the car.. also you might try it several times like hit it like your mad at it.. only use your hand not a hammer or anything damaging .. then try to start the car .. if it starts and runs you are soon going to need a new fuel pump... thanks jerry holler if you need more...
