GM Oil Life System Resetting - Resetting Procedure

When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message will come on. Change the engine oil as soon as possible within the next 600 miles (1000 km). It is possible that, if driving under the best conditions, the oil life may not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, the engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset.

If the system is ever reset accidentally, change the engine oil at 3000 miles (5000 km) since last oil change.

To reset the Engine Oil Life System, do the following:
1. Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off.
2. Slowly fully press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.
The reset is complete when the chimes sound and the CHANGE OIL lamp goes out. If the lamp stays on and no chime is heard, repeat the reset procedure.
3. Turn the key to OFF.

If the CHANGE OIL lamp comes back on when the vehicle is started, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure.

Other ways comment about on the driver side of the car theres a fuse panel on the side of the dash when you open the door. There should be a reset button inside there, if there is turn the key to the run postion push the button toill the oil change light starts flashing. After a few seconds there should be 3-5 beeps and the light should go out. If that buttons not there then turn the key to the run postion still and pump the gass to the floor three times. leave the key on till the light flashes and you the beepeing sound and the light should go out. If in doubt check your owners manual aswell it tells you how to reset it there to: ( 1993-current models. Must have a Yahoo ID to log in ).

Hope helps; keep us updated.

How to reset check oil light

You mean the change oil light, right ??
If it has a red button on the fuse box, you turn the key on and push the button, the change oil light should flash, then you push the red button until the light goes off.
If you don't have the red button, you turn the key on, push the gas pedal to the floor three or four times, and the light should go off.
The method for your model should be in the back of your owners manual.

  • There are a couple different Grand Am's that each reset their own way.
  • I am pretty sure yours resets by ---
  1. Get in the car and put the key into the ignition.
  2. Turn the key on (no start).
  3. Wait five seconds.
  4. Now press the gas pedal to the floor all the way three times in a row.
  5. Wait five seconds and the light will disappear.
  • The other way for some of the Grand Ams are ---

  2. Find the red "reset" button.
  3. Put the key in the ignition to on (no start).
  4. Wait five seconds.

How do u clear the code of change oil light on a 1999 grand am

on the drivers side end of the dash there is a removable panel that sometimes says fuses on it. You will need to have the door open to remove it. Once it is off you will see a red reset button. Turn the key on. push the reset button one time, the change oil light should start to blink. if not press it again. Once the change oil light is blinking press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds. an audible tone will beep three or four times and the light will go out.

I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

My change oil light is on, but the oil was just changed. How do I reset the computer?

To reset the light, open the driver's side fuse panel cover. Turn the key to "on", but do not start the car. Wait for most of the warning lights to go out, then press the red RESET button in the center of the fuse panel. The "Change Oil" light should flash. Then, press and hold the RESET button until the car chimes. Then, turn the key back to "off", and replace the fuse panel cover.

If that fails to turn off the light, turn the key to "On" once again without starting the car. Press the gas pedal to the floor 3 times in succession, then turn the key to "off". That should reset the light.

Change oil reset button location?

My change oil reset button on my 2002 Grand Am is in the fuse box by the drivers door. Turn the key on (so all dash lights are on), push the red reset button until the "change oil" flashes, then hold the button down until it clears from the dash. This should take care of it.
