Have a very slow power steering fluid leak. thoughts as to where it could it be leaking from?

The top of your power steering pump where the steering arm via ujoint is a seal, otherwise known as the power steering top seal is most likely seeping out, see if you can wipe it really good and trying driving it some, and then wipe it again, if fluid on top in, seal needs replacing, also check housenthatngo down to your steering area for leaks. Let me know, thanks Mike

Steering is pretty tight! is this a sign of system failure or fluid leak?

Could be a steering rack failure

There are other suspension items to check

Fluid leaks ,you would have seen, assuming you
look your vehicle over once a month and check fluids

No fluids are consummed on any veh system,
so topping off is a myth

Steering stiffens up at start.

low on steering fluid...possibly and needs to warm up to work properly. or belt may be a problem...have that checked for tightness and security.

My 2000 Mazda Protege DX has a tight steering. Can

Try turning the wheel when standing still with the engine running.
If it is tight check the obviouse, has the power steering belt come off. If not check if there is fluid in the steering pump resavour. If the belt is on and you have fluid you may have a bad pump.
I hope this helps
