Question about 1991 Toyota Previa

1 Answer

I believe I have to replace my stop lamp switch which I located under the dash on the driver's side. It has two cable looking wires connected to it and when I open it there are two brass looking cyclinders inside, one with the button. I can't see anyway to get the cyclinder out. When I call the parts stores the part they show is too big and that is what they have listed. Can you show me a picture of what a stop lamp switch for a 1991 toyota previa LE, cruise control looks like?

I believe what you are describing are some of the internals of the brake light switch, they, along with a spring, should be contained in a plastic housing which is normally removed as one piece.
It sounds as if the back of yours has come off, leaving the housing connected to a bracket above the brake pedal?
The part u have been shown at the dealers is more than likely the correct part as individual parts of the switch are not replaceable, hope this helps.

Check the On/Off switch on the dash, steering column, and the steering arm/lever is connected properly and that the lighting cable's are cable connectors are connected and not corroded.
1, To check the Earth: Connect a cable from the earth of the bulb to the chassis/body/ metal part of the car.
2, Using a Test lamp: Disconnect the cable that connects the power to the head light bulb, Connect one end of the test lamp to any one of the connectors at the end of the cable that plug's into the bulb. With the low beam on, only one of these wire's will the light switch turned on will light up the test lamp bulb. If none of the cable's light the test lamp bulb. the problem is in the High beam relay, and possibly the Low beam relay as well.
One Head lamp relay: If one cable show a light in the test lamp, check the earth cable on that lamp.
Two Head lamp relay: If two cable's show a light in the test lamp, check the earth cable on that lamp.
Some of the car's electrical systems use the Steering column as an earth point. Check the switch.
In many cases are what is called Earth return (this means that the positive power (+) is supplied by one wire, and the negative earth (-) is connected via another wire) this is to reduce the problems of the rust effecting the power flow.
Get the wiring loom layout in the Cars book

Tail light wire

Adjust the brake pedal switch located on the upper side of the brake pedal under the dash. To adjust the stop light switch, disconnect the two wires attached to the rear of the switch, move the switch by loosening the lock nut towards the brake pedal. As soon as the center pin of the switch begins to touch the brake pedal notch, rotate the switch half turn more and lock it by tightening the lock nut. Connect the wires back and ask your companion to see the tail lamps while you depress and release the brake pedal. Or you can see the tail lamp behavior by parking the car on reverse at a distance of one foot from any wall.

Hi, picked up a 1992 dodge steath RT and the seller removed a custom stereo and alarm. The turn signals are not working . all fuses , lamps and haz lamps andtailights etc working.. The denso reg okay...

Yup, the alarm module is usually located under the steering wheel in the dash (it splices into the ignition and wires in the steering wheel) thats where they would have removed the alarm module. Check for broken or unconnected wires under the drivers side dash under the steering wheel. loose broken wires should be able to see. make sure to feel for wires "tucked up in there." You can also try getting a new/used combination switch from parts department or junk yard (turn signal switch and/or hazard switch ) and seeing if replacing that works.

There is a fuse that controls; headlamps, DRL module & instrument cluster. It is the fuse box inside the vehicle mounted on the side of the dash on the drivers side and you can see the panel if you open the door. the fuse that I am talking about is in the # 33 position. If you are looking into the box the one on the very bottom closest to the firewall. There are onlt two fuses on the bottom and they are both sideways. It's a 15 Amp fuse. Ihope this helped you and good luck.

Have a 2009 F550 with 4 Aux. switches on dash, looking for connection location to these switches

Under the drivers side dash on the left side above the parking brake are 4 wires blunt cut. Check your manual to know which color wire goes to which switch. To use just connect the +12V wire of your accessory to the wire of choice and your done.

jumper 2 prongs together with paperclip
do brake lamps come on? if not
check fusable links (wires that are ment to melt if a short occures)

My breal lights dont work and i ned to know whick fuesa or sencer it is

The stop lamp fuse is in the rear junction block located under the back seat.
To remove the back seat, simply grab the front of the seat with both hands underneath and pull straight upwards, this releases the spring clips, no bolts or screws to remove.

The stop lamp fuse is numbered 19 in the diagram above.

Under dash driver side look behind the upper arm of clutch pedal and you should see a green and black wire coming from the button (switch) assembly on the firewall. The wires go up above the clutch pedal. About in the middle of under dash on the left side you should see a white connector these wires run to. Disconnect. I just had the problem and not only starts now but not stalling like it was but it's only been one day but tested it pretty good.
