Question about 1996 GMC Jimmy

I have a transfer case that is locked in 4 wheel drive, and I can't get it out. How do I go about getting it out?

Try put back in two wheel drive with lever or switch and try reversing a couple of yards might take it out for you

hey there i cant tell you what you are missing but i can tell you how to disengage the front wheels . ok you have a vacum line that runs right under the battery and a line that comes up from the front diff. to the same place ( you may have to remove batt and batt tray to get full access to this) un bolt it and temporaly put batt and batt tray back in start it up and decompress this and see if it comes out .... you should here clunking noise if it goes back in ... if thats the case just pull that big vaccum line off .... to test get all four tires off the ground and have some one put it in drive but dont hit the gas it should turn on its own ...if that dont work check the cable that runs down to the differental

On the 1989 s10 it has a vacuum actuator that actually locks the front differential in ,you need to check that first, those go bad real often,and without it. There's no way it will lock in the axle, the transfer case will lock in ,but the front differential uses a actuator. It 's located under the battery tray and there is a cable towards the front of the differential. Id say the actuator cable has gone out, most parts stores can get you one ,that what goes wrong with those 99% of the time and it only takes about 5 minutes to change it out. Good luck but check the vacuum line to the actuator under the battery tray.

If this is a 2004 Heritage ( old body style ) and the transfer case is known to lock in ( check with truck jacked up, shift into 4WD and try to turn front drive shaft ), the next item to look at is the vacuum disconnect motor for the front axle. This is on the front axle, and will move when shifted into 4WD

If you do not have movement in this, check the vacuum lines with a vacuum pressure gauge, to see if vacuum is being applied ( Pink line is 2WD w/ vacuum is operation, Blue line is 4WD w/ vacuum operation ). If no vacuum at the lines, check them back to the vacuum shift solenoids

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.

SOURCE: the transfer case will not shift into 4 wheel hi

I would suspect the vacuum disconnect motor or the vacuum solenoids for the disconnect motor ( or the vacuum lines ), but best to confirm
Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

With the engine running ( and wheel chocked, parking brake on ) have someone shift into 4WD, and watch the shift motor to see if it operates

If the disconnect motor does not shift, you can check the vacuum on the lines with a vacuum gauge. Blue line is 4WD operation, pink line is 2WD operation.
The vacuum solenoids are on the firewall, and look like this

This is assuming you have checked the fuses for the transfercase shift motor, and the vacuum solenoids.

get it from a service dealer spares shop or from transmission rebuild shops
check that you do not drive in 4 wheel drive on hard surfaces as opposed to all wheel drive on hard surfaces
when you select 4 wheel drive , the center diff locks up and that places extreme load on the chain in the transfer case which causes premature wear and failure

99 Ford F-150 won't go into 4wheel drive I looked undernieth and front drive shaft is not turning


Someone will have to go under and check the linkage is working when the 4 wheel drive is fully engaged and not just moved to a neutral position.

Is it right for your front drive shaft to turn by hand when in park


i'm assuming you have a 4 wheel drive. If that is the case then yes cause when your in two wheel drive mode the front is in neutral

Transfer case locks into low gear but front wheels do not pull


You have to have your front hubs locked in for four-wheel drive to work

Stuck in four wheel drive


If you are saying that the transfer case is stuck in 4WD, you may have to get under the vehicle, and look at the transfer case, on the front, you should be able to see where the 4WD shift lever hooks to the linkage. If it is disconnected/broken, take a pair of channel locks, or pliers, and pull the shaft you see coming from the transfer case. this will disengage the 4WD. Unfortunately, if you cant pull it. You will have to get someone to put the vehicle in Drive, and creep forward while you pull it. Make sure their window is down so they ear you say stop.

My transfer case is permanently engaged but no 4 wheel drive...


2 common problems that cause this are the vacuum switch on the transfer case and the vacuum actuator mounted under the battery tray. When the switch on the transfer case goes bad it pulls fluid out of the transfer case and pumps it into the actuator and destroys it. The switch only costs about $15 and are usually stocked at major auto parts stores. The actuator ranges from about $50 to $120 and most of the time need to be ordered. If you reach under the battery tray with the 4wd engaged and follow the cable you will feel the end of the actuator, make sure that it is pulling back. If not either the switch or actuator or both are bad. Hope this helps.

As far as I know the procedure should go something like this...

Stop the vehicle, engage the parking brake and if applicable, get out and turn the hubs on the front wheels from Free, to Lock.(You may not have these on a Suzuki, they may be auto-lockers)

Get back in the vehicle and put the transmission shift selector into Neutral.

If you have a manual transfer case, move the selector-shaft to 4x4-High, or 4x4-Low -- whichever is desired. Now, putting the vehicle in gear with the transfer case is sometimes somewhat difficult. As long as the vehicle's transmission is in neutral, don't worry, the gears inside the transfer case are big and beefy -- Don't be afraid to be rough -- Again as long as the transmission is in neutral. You may also have to disengage the parking brake and slightly let the vehicle roll forward or back with your foot-brake to get the Transfer case to lock into place.

Once 4x4 of the selected High, Or Low range is selected, usually indicated by the vehicle jerking slightly with a slightly loud clank/thud. Move the Transmission selector out of neutral into your desired gear (Drive if Automatic, if Manual, whichever gear you pull out from). and voila! You should now be in 4-Wheel-Drive.

To disengage 4-Wheel-Drive. Just reverse the steps.
